I recently got a replacement laptop adapter since the one I had was making sparking noises. However, they ended up sending me both the 90W (by accident) and the 120W. The 90W adapter is TINY compared to the 120W and I would love to use it whenever I'm travelling (not using 6770m). How safe is it using an underpowered laptop adapter?

I would think it just charges slower.
I have heard that new dv6 s come with the small one. -
No, I just received a dv6tse (i5) and it had the 120W fat adapter.

When you're not playing games, max power draw from the Intel Chip is 65W so you're fine with the 90W adapter. But when you're playing games with the AMD graphics, stick to the 120W adapter.

I've been using a dell 65w adapter for travel on my dv6tqe w/6770m. It never had problems supplying power to keep the laptop charged while on IGP. I did try to play SC2 with the 65w adapter, and the adapter shutdown after 5 minutes, but it didn't burn out. I think there is a fail safe switch built into the power adapter to prevent over supplying/over heating. All I had to do to 'restart' the adapter was unplug/replug it from the socket.

Why take the chance with using an under-rated adapter in the first place? It sucks if you have to replace one and cough up over $120USD, I understand. But considering that you probably spent close to or over $1000USD on the dv6, it would be far wiser to protect your investment rather than endanger it.
