I have the DV6938 SE model and I know it has a built in webcam and microphone.

When I go into the control panel to setup the microphone, it says it can't hear me speaking.

How did everyone else get their microphone to work?

Okay, I tried to record something loud and it played back very quietly.

It does work, its just VERY quiet. I boosted the recording volume as much as possible, but does not work well.

By the way. it's actually the dv6000 model.

If it has RealTek Audio, you can increase the mic boost from +20db to +40db.

I found the microphone on the DV9700t to be really weak as well. Not more than 36 inches away and it barely picks up anything. I basically have to put my face up to the screen to get the mics to register me well. Any tips would be appreciated. Already boosted the gain on it to max.

Mine is on +40db and it's still too low.

You definitely need to have your laptop right in front of you and the screen needs to be tilted straight up versus angled back. Even with that, if you have the Conextant (sp?) audio, it will still suck.

As the other poster said, an external microphone is the best way to solve the problem. You can get a cheap corded one that goes over the ear for less than $10 at places like pcmicrostore and meritline.
