    Hi all,

I own a Compaq V2000 laptop (Semperon 3000+, 512 ram) I've had it for 6 months now and havent really used it much.

It gets really hot nearly too hot to rest my palm on. There is a fan on the underside of the laptop but it never spins, and I don't think it has ever spun.

Is this normal? Is there another fan somewhere else?

I've run a temp program and the laptop sits at 50C and goes up to 75C regularly.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Matt

Looks like the fan does spin, but only sometimes...

Is there a way to keep the fan on always?

In speedFan the core temp sites at 70C always.

The heat comes from your hard disk. The fan won't help you with that.
Run MobileMeter or anyother application that shows you the temp of the HDD. If the ambient temp is high the notebook as a whole will be hotter.
If you get another 512mb ram, the temperature of the HDD will fall (it's being constantly accessed for virtual memory).
A notebook cooler is a cheap and very effective solution.

Ok thanks mate, I'll go the extra ram + laptop cooler path.

One more thing - raise the back of the laptop when you use it on a desk. This improves the ventilation and helps with the HDD temperature. I have also found that removing the PCMCIA cover, which is right above the HDD, helps.
For the cooler - get one that blows air upwards to the laptop, rather than one that sucks air out of the laptop.
    Cheers
