Could that be a result of only having 256 RAM, or might there be a more serious defect involved? On reboot everything is perfect again. On Alt. Ctrl. Delete the window message says spyware might be involved, but it is not detectable. Could it be due to the included bloatware?

I sure you already did some preliminary check-ups, before you posted, right?
Did you perform: an anti-virus scan?
an anti-spyware scan?
What programs (I should say bloatware) are starting up with windows? Use MSCONFIG to find out. If there is a lot of nonsense, like a program called Porn-Finder, or BunnyHunter, you might want to disable that...
Check out the Event Viever and look at error/warnings/informations at around the time the freeze happens......
Do you have all your drivers up-to-date?
Did you run Windows Update to make sure your computer is up-do-date?
Are you using your laptop on a flat surface?
Are you blocking any air vents?
Is the bottom of computer really hot?
What exactly were you doing when it froze?
Do you like Mexican food..? I do.... lol
What do you mean the Ctrl.Alt.Del. window is saying that spyware is involved? Could you be a little more specific? Is there a message saying "Warning: your computer is like ****ed up from spyware? -
Crazy_Person did a good job of diagnosing your problem with questions. True, not enough RAM may be severely slowing down your system (upgrading to 512MB or better yet 1GB would help), but do you have multiple anti-spyware programs? Here's a list that I use:
1.Spyware Doctor
2.Adaware-SE (Free Edition)
3.Spysweeper
4.Spybot-SD
5.MS Anti-Spyware
Most all of these can be had by searching on Google. I know that MS Anti-Spyware doesn't do much, but it does catch the "biggies". I'd try upgrading RAM before trying to remove the spyware as to free up space on the computer. -
Not to mention that the v2000 has integrated intel graphics which borrows memory from system. So if you have 256 MB, you actually have like 200 MB. Like xAMDvsIntelx said, install more memory.
Did you look at Compaq's Support Web-Site? They have tons of information there.

It wouldn't hurt if you go through some of those articles that apply specifically for you.... -

Usually it happens after yahoo games. I do adaware, CCleaner, and Yahoo spy scans plus Norton is installed. The V2000 came with loads of stuff preinstalled. Could the 256 memory be the cause or is that unlikely?

Usually it happens after Yahoo games. I regularly scan with adaware, CCleaner, and Yahoo antispy and Norton is installed. After A_C_D the message comes back from windows saying it could be spyware or add-ons but that does not seem to be the case. I will check the resources you mentioned. The unit is only two months old so being outdated is not the problem, thanx.

OK looks like the game may use an older version of direct X. This is not a major problem. Thanx again.

Yahoo games are in Java, so I suggest finding the latest Java. I had problems with the version, which came with my laptop

lol i thought that the integrated took 128mbs of ram away =D
