My adaptor seems to be HOT when charging the battery and VERY HOT when charging and using the notebook at the same time.

Anyone got this problem? I've already called HP and they say it's defective adaptor but now they sent me a new one.... it's still the same. So... I'm wondering is this normal? will it explode or something? because it's very hot right now

Mines gets pretty warm too, but I wouldn't call it hot. It's definitely much warmer than the adapters I've had with other notebooks. Anyway, I highly doubt it'll ever get hot enough to actually explode.

Just got my wife's dv4000, and while working on it last night. It's adapter got WAY hot. Almost too hot to touch. Will be contacting HP about it.

Just got off of online chat with HP tech. They're sending me a new adapter, so we'll see what happens...

You might be ok because they're sending a replacement rather than an additional AC adapter. Be warned, however - HPShopping.com doesn't know what AC adapter fits the d\/4000: link to post

Yeah, I've been reading those posts, too. Added my own to be specific about the dv4000.

My adapter for my v2000 gets blazing hot sometimes, usually when the batt. is drained and I am charging wile using the laptop. It is an intermittant problem, mabey it is things such as this, that contributes to the v2000 6-cell wear level being way too high. Any thoughts???????????????

I got the same thing like u said. Already change the adapter but still be the same "Blazing hot" if the battery is drained and charging at the same time.

Mine gets fairly warm (compared to my previous Toshiba and Dell laptop it is same) when battery is drained and same time I am using laptop. During this time, it has to work at its fullest capacity as it is charging the battery as well supply power to running laptop. This is common among the most of the laptops.( Even with more than 80+% efficiency it will generate more than 10watts of heat.)

But may be yours is defective, if it is really getting hot.

BTW most electronic components can survive more temp than we think, more than 100c. Most of those are rated to 125c+.(centigrade).

You can always can get a replacement if you see that as a problem. Support is really good. I went online chat for replacement of my HDD which gave me Smart failure warning, nextday they sent me upgraded HDD (5400RPM instead of 4200) by fedex over night! Kudos to HP quick reponse.

    Here is my story:
I surfed the web until the battery ran down. I then plugged in my AC adapter, turned the screen brightness all the way up and turned off all power management. I then played BF2(or tried) for an hour. I gave up and put the laptop up before I went to bed and almost burnt my hand on the AC adapter. It gets real hot if the battery is drained and the computer is being heavily used.

Go see the big Undervolting the AMD Turion thread. That'll knock back your power consumption a bit, especially when doing something heavy like BF2, which will help keep your power brick cool. My undervolted zv5000z's power brick runs merely slightly warm, and outright cool when using an external monitor instead of the built-in display. Of course, it's a frickin' huge brick...

If you really want to have warranty-voiding fun you can try swapping in a high-end Turion MT series CPU, but undervolting should get you much of the same effect.

I just contacted HP customer service for a replacement AC adapter. My Vaio's AC adapter gets rather warm as well but never so hot that I can't hold it for more than a second or two. I'm paranoid because my cable modem's AC adapter had the same problem and I didn't notice it right away, but the silver label on the adapter turned brown because it was burned. RoadRunner gave me a new modem for free but still, it was easily a fire hazard.

Well, we'll see how the replacement AC adapter goes. If it's the same way, I guess I just have to live with it and be careful where I place it when I'm using the computer AND charging it at the same time.

I think it's normal for our adapters :(
everyone has the same heat problem when charging while on heavy use.

I had the same problem, recieved the replacement adapter but still produce the same heat. (if charge while on heavy use)

Well, I don't. I'm almost sure that the adaptors for L2000 and v2000z are the same, yet there may be some difference. Mine is working just fine; probably a little bit warmer than my GSM adaptor.

So let me understand this - for a 12 cell/turion ml30 - how do i use the battery and ac adaptor so they dont overheat? do i need to remove the battery at a certain amount of usage? Should i not have the battery in if im pluggin into power? im not sure what to do when 'charging on heavy use'.
