Hi. My wife has a Compaq V2000z (that just went out of warranty, of course) and when she tried to boot up yesterday to use it, it just came up with a black screen with white lines all through it. I powered off the laptop and now it won't even post. When I power up the laptop I get the power on led and the capslock and numlock leds flash and that's it. I have tried the "power down" procedure that HP sent me in an email but that didn't help. I reseat the memory and that didn't help. Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

    Thanks,

    Moses

Good guess that the motherboard is fried. If there's absolutely no post, then that's usually the case. If if was bad memory then it would boot up but just bsod, and if it was a bad hard drive it would say no OS found.

mine did something similar...i reset the BIOS and it booted fine after that. Pull off one of the back covers and find the CMOS battery. (it might be under your wireless adapter like mine was) Pull the battery out, the CMOS battery out, and dont have it plugged in. (so the laptop gets NO POWER) then...put the battery back and boot up without the CMOS battery in. If it boots up then turn it off, replace the CMOS battery, and go on with your life...

Thanks Matt, I'll give that a try.

So if the motherboard is fried then I guess I'm looking at buying a new laptop? This thing is barely 13 months old :(

Yes, a new motherboard would cost alot of money, and it would simply be easier to buy a new notebook. A 13 month notebook, though, shouldn't just break down on you like that.

Mine just rolled Craps with the same problem. lined screen, tried to reboot, blank screen, caps and scroll lights blinking.
Tried the CMOS reset -- No dice. I wonder how many others this has happened to? Dell had a class action suit against them due to faulty powersupply design in the motherboard which triggered a recall. Glad to know there are others out there but a laptop should quit short of 2 years.

If there are any other support resources... let me know.

I had a similar experience with a 2month old v3000z. Before it totally died the video would flicker then stabalized. Then one day while using the net the whole thing crashed. Everytime I turned it on it would just beep and would not start, blank screen, no hd activity. I was looking through the beep codes and couldn't find a corresponding answer. I called HP support and went through a series of resetting the laptop but still no go. The person even heard the beeps that were being made. I guessed it was the motherboard. HP send me new laptop with upgrades but it was an HP not a Compaq. :)
