I just received my new V2000z with a Turion ML-37 and 12cell battery. I had bought a DELL XPS M140 and was not satisfied at all so I returned and bought this Compaq (I'm a previous Compaq user).

I think the black flip-top is dull and the computer's build feels weak. However, I'm really writing here to comment on the temperature of this thing: Man is HOT! The PM760 on the Dell was super-cool and my old AMD Athlon XP is super-cool too compared to my new Turion on the V2000z...

    Is this normal? Any thoughts?

Ah, BTW, I'm working with just 256KB of RAM while I get another 256KB stick...Do you guys think that the lack of RAM would force the processor to work this warm? Thanks!

Can you tell us what temps you are running? Try undervolting the processor, it will help decrease heat. I used to have the same problem with my Turion. It used to go up to 68C after undervolting the highest I get is 58C.

For the ram try to get a 512 or better yet a 1gb stick. You won't regret it. Ram is like cash you can never have too much.

That is strange. But, the Turion is kind of hot when you are not using undervolte. It suppose to get 68~69C as it specified(somewhere). But when you use undervolte, it's been cooled way down. The avg is about 55 less. That's one reason to use undervolt, to cool down your toy on your lap.

I had a actural compared my V2000Z to T43 1.86 GHz. My V2000Z has 512 MB RAM, and T43 from my friend has 1 GHz DDR2. Man, the T43 is sweating all the time. The guy would like to blow the air condition to cool down his machine, which almost makes him catch cold. Feels very sick to him. :(
I don't need to do anything to get my V2000Z setting on my lap.

You're not blocking the fan intake on the bottom of the notebook, are you? Power management is enabled and working (as it should by default)?

256MB of RAM will force the hard drive to be VERY active, which increases the heat it generates and in the cramped V2000 series chassis that raises the heat of everything. Buy a 512MB or 1GB PC3200 SODIMM, preferably 1GB.

You may also want to look into investing in a laptop cooler. I have similar specs to you and after undervolting and with a cooler, I idle in the low 40s with office work @ 10 hours per day.

I was dissapointed with the heat dissapation with the Turion at first as well. I realized that I was using a bugged driver. The bugged driver, would not allow understepping to a lower speed. It was locked on at full-throttle and 1.45v! To start off, please run the AMD Dashboard and reply back with the results.

I used to have 256mb too and my HD access is very frequent and makes it very hot. an additional 512mb made some improvements.
