The 80 GB Toshiba HD in my Compaq V2410CA will not spin down--even if I specify 3 minutes in the power control panel. I notice that every couple of seconds the drive does something. ie. pause, click-click, pause, click-click. HP tech support says this is completely normal though my father's V2570 doesn't seem to do the same thing. Is this normal? I'd love to save some power by having the drive go to sleep when it isn't needed.

    Thoughts?

It's normal. Windows is like that. There are just too many background processes running around doing who-knows-what. That option is only really useful in machines that have multiple HDs (like my dv8000z).

You can increase the odds if you have enough RAM to get away with shutting down virtual memory.
