Okay there are 2 advertised specials at Best Buy and Circuit City. As far as I can tell the main difference is Best Buy for a $100 more includes a 100GB vs 80GB (both only 4200) and a 1.8 processor instead of 1.6.

Here are the specs on the HP site for both

    CC V2410US $799 after rebates

    BB BV2424NR $899 after rebates

    would like opinions please...

Deciding between the two is very subjective. Are you going to run any CPU-intensive apps? Are you going to do anything that'll make use of an extra 20GB? (A USB TV tuner to use the notebook as a PVR, for example. HDTV uses up 9GB/hour.) CPUs are a pain to upgrade later but replacing the HD is trivial (except for the part where you copy stuff from the old drive to the new).

I'd also configure a custom machine on hp.com and see how the price compares. Select the 12 cell battery option and Bluetooth if you do that, neither of which are available at retail. Select a 5400RPM HD too. Hmm, that does seem to be significantly more expensive than the store specials. Maybe not. And you can swap in a 7200RPM HD on your own (which HP doesn't sell) if you decide you want a faster drive. Not everyone needs one, they're mostly for lunatics like me.

They are fairly similar. The hard drive will give a bigger perfromance boost than the CPU. I'd spend the extra cash getting the 7200RPM drive.

I would first see how much I can get for the 100gb disk if I sell it. Then buy the 1.8ghz notebook and use the money to buy 60 or 80 gb, 5400 rpm HD.
Yet, think about the bluetooth thing; it's really nice having it inside the laptop.
