    Hi,

Sister owns a Compaq Presario V3000Z notebook. Apparently lately she has had times when the notebook will not power on. Tells me she has to press the power button quite a few times before it will startup. Of course she neglected to tell anyone until it became worse.

So may I have a list of things to check and hopefully narrow down and/or fix the problem?

    Thanx for your time,
    Vaath

I've heard of similar issues for the pavilions; where the power has to be pressed several times or really hard to get the machine to turn on. Apparently, it's an issue with the button itself. If this is indeed the case, she will have to send it to HP.

One thing you can try first is to remove the battery for about a minute, and then re-insert the battery (Make sure the notebook is OFF first! Hibernate doesn't count!) This has the effect of "refreshing" the internal electronics, so maybe the power button will work better after that (Don't worry; the BIOS and the Hard Drive will be unaffected).

If the machine is out of warranty, you can crack it open to see if the switch has a loose connection or is bad. You'll have to find instructions online to figure out how to get it open. Of course, trying this is at your own risk.

However, as I stated above, I've heard of Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 owners complain about the same thing, and it's usually been an issue with the button itself, which means you'll have to send it to HP.
