Hello all, long time reader but first time poster...

Just picked up a Compaq V5000 today, and I've come across a problem.
The HDD has a separate "recovery partition" that takes up around 9GB of the HDD.

I'm currently in the process of burning a set of recovery discs, and will be completely wiping the HDD and re-partitioning everything into 1 drive (no more recovery partition)

If I use the recovery discs that I burnt to reinstall Windows and the drivers, will it over-write the partioning (ie. will it recover the "recovery partition")?

After this step I plan on manually removing all the bloatware from the install, unfortunately it seems Compaq neglected to include a set of Windows install discs with the notebook. :(

The recovery discs that you burn will just recover to the factory state - meaning it will reinstall evry software and restore the recovery partition.

If you want to do a clean install then you will really need your own Windows XP disc or will have to get one from HP. They used to offer clean Win XP disc's but ever since the beginning of this year, they switched to the recovery partition method and started charging for the clean Win Xp discs.

One more thing, do keep a backup of the C:/SWSetup folder as it will contain all of the necessary drivers for the laptop in case you are doing a clean install. Also you might need to slipstream SATA drivers if your laptop has a SATA driver(Intel version of the V5000 uses SATA drives). Go through the threads on the dv2000t/dv8000t reinstallation guides for more information...

Ugh... that'll make it a real PITA.

I guess I could always just manually un-install all the bloatware and delete the recovery partition afterwards. Unfortunately that won't take care of the registry though. :(

Will try that after I make the recovery discs.

I can't believe they stopped putting the recovery discs in with new computers - every Compaq I've owned so far has them - it's only two DVDs... probably cost HP an extra 20 cents for each $1000 laptop they sell

Well just so you know my Recovery disks did not work when i needed to use them so be fore worned that if your computer crashes like mine did those disks will not work. It leaves out a very important file that you need. Not sure what it was cause I had to call HP and Spend $50 Bucks to get The clean version of xp. I have had nothing but problems since.

Just thought you would like to know
