Has anyone done or seen a review on the V5000Z Compaq yet? I would really appreciate any help.

What do you want to know? I've been to busy to do a full write up yet, but I could answer specifics if you have them.

I will say overall I think it is a good machine and an excellent value. Check the thread I started about the v5000z pix for my configuration. Runs cool. Is fast (enough for me).

I have the v5005US and I love it. Definitely an upgrade from the ibook 600 I used to have. Not planning on doing any gaming though.

Couple of questions about this laptop. How is the heat? Is there a keyboard flexing issue and what kind of battery life do you get with your system? Thanks for your time.

Heat is a lot less than my old laptop (Cmpq Evo n800c P4 1.7 with 512 ram) under normal use. It gets hot if you set it on a bed or something, but that happens with any laptop. I use an xpad, and its been more than fine. There are huge vents for the air to go in/out, and the fan does a good job.

I honestly have no clue what people mean by the keyboard flexing. I have not noticed this at all, so i guess it makes it a non-issu for me.

I have the 12 cell, and I would say I get about 4+ hrs on a charge using wifi.

Great information so far, couple more questions. How is the durability of the actual laptop? I'm really interested in this particular comp/model.

Any other pros and cons you can tell me about it?

Also, one more question, what are the different model numbers for, such as 5000, 5005, etc.? And what do they mean?

One more thing, the V2000 had an issue with closing, it made a loud noise when clasping and also does it close all the way? The V2000 had a problem with one side not really covering the entire end, being able to slip paper through at least. Has this been fixed?

One more thing, I'm trying to decide between the ML-32 and the ML-34 because of the cache, will I notice a big difference in this?

I think durability's fine. I've only had it for a couple weeks, so I've been careful with it. There is a kinda loud noise when you close it, but it doesn't really bother me. The screen kinda closes aroud the kb, so you wouldn't really slip anything through underneath the screen.

The biggest con I can come up with right now is the placement of the touchpad. I have to hover my right hand while typing to avoid moving where I'm typing. I also seem to be dropping letters while I type. Not sure if that is the actual comp's fault or me just getting used to it.

Also, if you build-to-order a v5000, the model is v5000 CTO (Custom to order). The other model numbers just are different configurations. Look at hp's site to see what the different models include.

Thanks for the great replies so far, probably gonna order this tomorrow, but had a few last questions. What do you mean by dropping letters? I'm alittle confused. All the buttons on your keypad work right? And you said in another post that you don't see any flexing in the keys right?

I saw this feature on another laptop, the ability to turn off and on the touchpad, does this laptop have it? Thank you so much. I'm from Rochester, MN, nice to see someone in the area's enjoying this!

They all work, its just sometmes a keystroke doesn't register. Like I said, I don't know if its me or the kb. Having to hover my right hand has kind've thrown off my typing.

This one doesn't have that feature, afaik. I know what you're talking about, but there's not a button for this. You can turn off the wifi with a button, though.

hm, it's strange that v5000z does not have the option to turn off the touchpad. Very strange. There must be a software soltion to this because otherwise it's awfully uncomfortable.

    Ok, try this program: http://www.yaranga.net/TouchFreeze/
I read a few nice comments about it but I haven't tried it. It should detect typing and automatically disable the touchpad. Please do tell me how it works if you decide to try it.

Mech e, would it be possible for you to get back to us about the missing keystroke problem, because I plan on using this laptop for typing mainly and this would really be a problem for me. Thanks again.

I have the same problem with the key strokes it for some reason will miss a key here and there. This is my first laptop and it also could be just me. It only happens about 1 time out of every 100 words or so.

I really think its just me. I like the way the kb feels, its just awkward positioning with my right hand having to hover over the touchpad, while my left rests on the laptop.

Has anyone used this program and what it's like? When does the touchpad turn back on then when using it?
