I've got an HP dv5t laptop with an HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner. Analog and digital (both clear QAM and ATSC) work perfectly in HP's QuickPlay application.

However, VMC (Vista Media Center) only shows analog and, even so, the picture is jerky and annoying.

Does anybody know how to make clear QAM work in VMC with a HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner?

Does anybody know how to improve the picture for analog in VMC?

Right now, I've installed the MyNetflix plugin, the vmcNetflix plugin, Vista Codec Package 5.0.6 and Vista Codec x64 Components 1.5.9. (I've flirted with the idea of installing the hard-to-obtain, OEM-only Media Center TV Pack 2008 but haven't done it.)

Does anybody have more technical info about the HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner?

I wonder if it is an OEM'd part from Avermedia or Hauppauge. Perhaps the solutions for the card manufacturer's direct sale parts will work for this part. Anybody know if and what product the HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner is based on?

In Device Manager, the TV tuner is listed as "HP ATSC/Analog TV Tuner".

I have an HP dv5t laptop with 64-bit Vista SP 1, bought around 12/1/2008. The TV tuner driver has a date of 4/22/2008.

After some investigation, it is fairly clear that it is manufactured by AVerMedia. The card is either identical or a variation on the AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid NanoExpress ExpressCard (which is also called the AVerMedia A317 Mini-Card Hybrid Analog/ATSC in some places).

It uses the NXP SAA7160 chipset which is manufactured by NXP, a subsidiary of Philips.

The driver files provided by AVerMedia are:

    AverBDA716x_x64.sys (Version 1.3.64.48)
    MV716x_x64.ax (Version 1.0.12.0)

The driver files provided by Vista Media Center are:

    BdaSup.sys
    drmk.sys
    ksthunk.sys
    portcls.sys

All the Vista Media Center drivers are Version 6.0.6001.18000 (a.k.a. longhorn_rtm.080118-1840).

Vista Media Center also reports Version 6.0.6001.18000 so it is fairly clear that HP has NOT included the OEM-only Windows Media Center TV Pack 2008. If it did include it, the version would have been 6.1.1000.18273.

I did actually install the Media Center TV Pack 2008 on my HP dv5t laptop. I installed:

MediaCenterTVPack2008-KB953272-x64.msu (Media Center TV Pack 2008)
    PlayReadyPC_x64.msi (PlayReady 1.2)
    Windows6.0-KB950754-x64.msu (KB950754)
    Windows6.0-KB951685-x64.msu (KB951685)

Media Center TV Pack 2008 mostly works but the MSNBC News item broke and VMC feels a bit more sluggish and error prone. It isn't bad but, if I can't get clear QAM to work, I'll probably re-install without Media Center TV Pack 2008. It's only worth it if clear QAM would work.

I haven't gotten clear QAM to work in VMC. I think that HP or AVerMedia needs to make a driver that specifically supports Media Center TV Pack 2008 and I think that they haven't made it yet for either their own AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid NanoExpress or their OEM'd (to HP and Dell) versions, including HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner. Perhaps that will make a new version in 2009.

I also tried the following drivers (some were long shots, admittedly):

AVerMedia AVerTV Hybrid NanoExpress 1.3.64.59 (64-bit)
Dell AVerTV Hybrid NanoExpress ATSC R175810
HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner 1.3.64.48 A (64-bit)

Analog cable worked with all drivers. Clear QAM, as tested in HP QuickPlay, stopped working for the AVerMedia and Dell drivers. In some cases, they might pick up 5-10 HDTV stations but couldn't tune any of them. (Normally, I get 30-40 HDTV stations.)

The HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner 1.3.64.48 A driver seemed to have no effect. It was hard to determine if it was installed or not. I suspect that HP made slight modifications to the driver and didn't update version numbers.

All the drivers installed smoothly and uninstalled the old driver smoothly. However, I was careful to create a Restore Point before installing each driver and, in every case, doing a System Restore to that point did make the original HP driver and clear QAM work perfectly again in HP QuickPlay.

Again, I think that the basic problem is that none of the variations, including the AVerMedia original, have upgraded drivers that support Media Center TV Pack 2008. Barring writing my own driver or finding an open source one, clear QAM in VMC using these particular cards appears hopeless for now.

In response to dave911la, you may need to scan for ATSC channels using the Run Setup Wizard menu item in HP QuickPlay. Some programs mix up ATSC and clear QAM so, if things aren't working, it pays to scan for both.

Other than that, it was fairly straightforward for me. I assume that you hooked it up to the coaxial cable, somehow know that you have clear QAM channels, plugged in your computer and all that obvious stuff.

    Hi All,

I've been unable to get vmc or any tv tuning program to recognise my HP ATSC/Hybrid Tuner despite installing the drivers. Anybody else have this issue?

My dv4t didn't come with the tv tuner cable that allows direct connection to the cable jack from the wall. I have the antenna, but I want to connect directly to the wall..... I am trying to figure out the name of the end that connects to the tv tuner card in the PC. I think it is an mmcx plug, but it has the slits in the side like an mc-card plug. Anybody know the answer to this?

    Thanks.
