Hi people. This is my 1st post on this forum.
I have various problems with that notebook.
1. I cant by any means correct the tones on the display via control panel. Monitor is either to bright or too dark. The brightness is way too much for this monitor. The backlight is way too much, something that is noticeable in the lower area of the display.
2. Various HP services make the notebook so much slow. The HD keeps reading all the time and rarely stops. (no0 nothing is connected on the internet not there is a scan procedure running on the back round. I disabled those services and it became much faster. But its not a notebook anymore. No quickbuttons, no touch screen, no connectivity.....SO this is no solution for me. Try to disable some vista services as well but didn't get the results i wanted to.
3. Then i thought of trying installing Windows XP in a separate partition just not to have Vista uninstalled. Partition created just fine. But dvd drive cant read XP install CD. Tried 2 different versions. My original XP pro SP2 cd and minimal version called BLack XP. Once cd didnt even boot but made some continuous read-search noises until a BSOD, while the second cd went through the drivers load procedure but got me a BSOD just before the installation screen ("setup is ready to install windows"). So this notebook refuses to read non VISTA windows cd's???
I really need help. I don't know if i can keep this notebook with all these problems. Especially the monitor problem. I can believe this display is normal for our eyes. If someone did manage to set it properly please post it here.
PS. Why HP allows only one set of recovery disks? what if those disks get broken or dont work after some time? Ww payed for the hardware and the OS installed i think.

Hey Snips,
Here is a suggestion that comes from my experience in switching to XP Pro on my DV9000 laptop. If your hard drive is SATA which I'm sure it is, disable the sata in the BIOS.
This let me install XP Pro without a problem. Also, I installed a really nice version of XP that was slipsteamed with a bunch of drivers to work with current hardware. If you do a search for XP Ultimate by Johnny you'll find where to download it from.
Best of luck -
Thx for your answer.
Unfortunately my BIOS is so minimal.. Not a single option to alter except the boot options.. -
You'll need to slipstream SATA drivers on to your XP CD in order for XP to recognise the HDD. Look for the XP re-installation threads in the forum, it should provide you the information you need to install XP. BTW, this is a comon problem with any new system with SATA HDD's nothing to do with the dv5 in particular.
As far as recovery diss's are concerned you can probably just make a copy of the recovery DVD's as many times as you want. -
Ty m8.
I understand the option of the DVD copies but what about if the original recovery disks got burned wrong or something? -
Then you're F*cked
