Does anyone know if the Card you CAN order when you buy a dv9500t is linked to a contract or allows uncontracted use of the service?

The card is to be activated for service. You have to contact Verizon and see what their rates are and contract terms are. If you're already with Verizon you can have a discount on wi-fi access. Last time I went to Verizon their monthly rate was $80 if you had no account with them and about $50-$60 with account.

The speec says it requires a contract, however, You can usually sign up with a different service.

FWIW, I think you can do much better getting the card (or a different card) from another source with a contract. I see delas where the cards are often very inexpensive or free when you sign up.

I dont like Verison. They where booting customers that exceeded 5 gigs on thier "unlimited" plan/ Although they claim to have stopped the practice, it leaves me with a bad taste.

I have been happy with Sprint. They have an unlimited paln for $59, they dont boot customers for heavy use, and have a roaming agreement with AllTell, so even though they don't have Sprint EVDO in my area, I get it anyway, cause AllTell does.

I got a Ovation 727 USB "card". That way, I can hook it directly to a VM running VM Workstation, and proxy the connection to the other VM's with Virus scanning though a lightweight virsus scanner. I really dont do much of that though, since I got a little router the size of a deck of playing card, and I hook up the Ovation 727 directory to it, then provide mobile boradband to all my devices.

    Hope that helps!

    Joe

I've had the Verizon V740 ExpressCard since March of this year and love it.
Great reception (Greater LA region) and the speeds are fantastic I've gotten ~2.0Mbps twice in the W. LA area. The average speed is between 700k - 1.2Mbps according to speedtest.net.

    I say go for it!

thanks, I've been researching for the past week and it seems sprint is the way to go. $59 / month is pretty nice esp with no limit (for real) rather than verizons no limit (maybe). BTW.. I have good info that in the Chicago area Verizon continue to cut service when throughput exceeds 5Gb (friend of mine).

also - how is that laptop treating you? its the exact laptop I just ordered (est Dec 18th). I bought it for development purposes so needed something with good general throughput and reliability with a nice sized screen.

    thanks

I looked at a link somewhere (perhaps form above) that gave some oiniters on how to get Sprint for $49/ with no contract. Wish I remembered where (too late for me). Anyway, the DV9500-T is a very good laptop for development, especially if you have VMWorkstation installed. Love it! Bought three of um!

It's true! I got two of the BYOD (bring your own device) accounts.

Same great sprint broadband, no caps, better support, no taxes ($59/mo includes everything), no contract. Awsome. I save almost $10/mo. Also, got rid of the $7mo insurance by purcahasing a second card on ebay.

    millenicom.com Rocks!
