I don't know why but my cpu usage is constantly above 10% and sometimes even spikes to 40-60% just for opening a new page in firefox.
Could it be the fault of vista? Or is this computer generically slow?
Compared to my old deskptop with Athalon 3000+ this new laptop is much slower.

So what remedies are there to fix this issue? Would purchasing an additional GB of ram help? (currently 2gb)

There is no reason for it to be that slow. Its possible you have a virus or spyware on the system, or that the Vista installation is somehow now screwed up. Does the task manager show any processes that are eating an unusual amount of CPU time?

you must have spyware in your system. When you first got the laptop did you do a clean install?

wow thanks for the quick responses
Greg, I just did a virus scan and a spyware scan using nod32 and spybot S&D and it did not show any problems. The most consuming tasks for me are:firefox, svchost, and mfpmp.exe
dondah88, yes my power setting is set to high performance
dinapoli, yep, I reinstalled windows the first day I got it. too bad I didn't go for XP instead

btw, my system has 73 processes running and utilizing 886mb of memory on idle.

something is veryu wrong , my 8510 is as fast or faster than my desktop amd 5400x2 . either you have some spyware or vista install screwed up . there is NO way it is as slow as an amd 3000 !

the cpu usage is normal. ur computer uses the cpu as much as it can to provide fast load times so i wouldn't worry about that. As far as it being as slow as a amd 3000+, it depends on how much ram you had in your other system and what the speed is of ur 8510p. U gotta provide some specs. If ur 8510p is 1.8ghz, then ya, its gonna be slower. Firefox doesn't utilize dual core lol

Edit: btw all CPUs spike when they load. cuz they are loading.

wow jerry what OS do you have installed? My computer consume nearly 2x the amount of ram
@dreidel, my old system had 2gb of ram and my 8510p is 2.0ghz. Firefox seems to support dual core because the usage varies similarly during tasks
i dont think the high cpu usage is normal, especially during idle

I'm running 67 processes with about ~500mb mem used. My CPU usage is all over the place between 1-4% and then leaps above 10% randomly when Vista does crap or when I'm loading stuff.

Everything loads fine and quite fast however, so I dunno. You could try disabling all the extra services Vista uses.

As an aside, 886mb at idle is a heck of a lot IMO...only 6 processes more than me but well over 300mb more? Seems suspicious!

well, i remember when i first started my 8510p with vista x64 i had 82 processes running. For me that was way too much, so i decided to downgrade to xp 32.

i spent some time figuring out which processes are needed and which ones are just obsolete.
right now i have 39 processes running and a total ram usage of 338 mb in idle mode.

if something is eating up so many resources, you should try to figure out what´s the culprit. the taskmanager should show you what process is working so "hard".
if you can´t figure what´s the problem, maybe it´s time for a fresh install of your os.
