I recently replaced a dead Acer 3680 with a new Compaq C727US running Vista Premium. I immediately upgraded to 2gb RAM, and for the most part I am very pleased with the machine and OS. However, my WIFI connection is very slow, to the tune of 500-800kbps download speeds according to Speedtest.net. My Acer w/XP Home before it died was hitting 4000-5000 kbps on Speedtest.net, and my hardwired LAN machines are hitting 8000+ kbps (Time Warner Biz Class).
I installed the most current Broadcom driver last night available on the Compaq site, and it does not help. I am using NOD32 AV, and no firewall of any sort. I use both Firefox and IE7, and see no speed difference between the two browsers. Checking the settings of the wireless within Control Panel, it is set to max performance on AC power. I see no setting within Vista that would be slowing the wireless connection down due to power.
I'd appreciate any ideas as to how to fix this. I've read there are "smart settings" within Vista that we can't tweak, but this slow speed is really a major fault if it is Vista-related.
Thanks for your help.

Maybe the location of WiFi antenna on new laptop is not at a good spot as compared to your old laptop. Try rotating the laptop until the signal strength bar meters is at the highest. The weaker the signal the slower the speed.
My previous laptop WiFi antenna was at the right side and my current laptop is at the front. My WiFi router is at another room and it's normal behind the laptop which means the new laptop is not picking up the signal as well as my old laptop. When I rotated the laptop so the antenna faces directly to the WiFi router, the signal strength increases and it appears to be downloading a little faster.
