Technically you modified the GPU's cooling solution and the GPU seems to have died from overheating. So the modification potentially caused the laptop to fail, and HP could view that as an out-of-warranty situation. Knowing them and what I've read online about them being proactive with cancelling warranties...that's probably exactly what will happen with this laptop. You might get lucky and HP might not see it that way and just repair it. At best you can file for an RMA and they'll fix it, at worst they say no and you're left with exactly what you have now.

You might want to try cleaning out the fans first though; it sounds like the laptop was really overheating and that could be caused by dust build up. If the thermal grease is actually okay and you clean out a really big dust bunny then just maybe you'll get lucky.
