I have a HP dv6 2120ca. It is now 1 year and two months old. I am running windows 7, but mostly ubuntu 10.10. The "symptoms" are easy to replicate in windows, but a bit more erratic in linux.

Here is the simplest way to to crash my system:
    1. Boot under windows 7
note that when windows load, it works fine. I can listen to netflix, or youtube video, browse the internet, write documents, read mail, etc.
    2. Start -> Control panel -> Review your computer's status (under System and Security)
    3. View performance information (left frame)
    4. Re-run the assessment (bottom right)

It will inevitably crash after the screen blink once. The computer freeze (I cannot turn on/off the num lock, caps lock, etc.) and the screen becomes black.

Then come the interesting part. When I try to start the computer again there is video noise laptop pictures by spacemen12 - Photobucket (last 3 pictures) before the hp splash screen (bios like intro). If I let the computer down for a while (30 minutes) I can sometime reach the windows splash screen, but video noise is never far away (see other pictures and notice the splash screen fading away in the noise), and the computer crash. In that case it also shutdown automatically instead of freezing.

I am wondering what is wrong with my computer. It is not under warranty anymore. I wonder if I replace the motherboard if it will solve that problem.

I tested my memory (using ubuntu live cd) and it is fine, I try live cd without hard drive and the problem is still there.

To make my life harder the first crash occured when I upgraded the ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04. Now my linux is dead (I cannot boot there anymore) and the live cd crashes at various progress stage so I cannot re-install.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, if you have questions, please let me know.

    Thanks,

Pictures look like LCD cable is broken. Do you have any possibility to test with an external display?

    Hi,
I forgot to mention that if I wait long enough, I can boot under windows and everything is alright.
But, no mater of long I wait, I can't run ubuntu live cd.
I currently have no way to test with external monitor, but since the monitor embedded monitor works just fine...

    Thanks,
