    Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me here. I recently purchased a refurb HP Envy 14 Beats edition with the i7-740 CPU. I did plenty of research ahead of time regarding power, etc. as I bought this machine to edit video. My editing software, etc. all runs fine, but for some reason, whenever I try to play any decent resolution video files (avi or mov)with Quicktime, Windows Media Player or VLC Player, they're extremely choppy and basically unwatchable!

This is extremely distressing as it makes the laptop basically worthless for what I need - to top it off, my several year old, discount-priced AMD desktop can play these files with no problems, so I can't believe this is how the laptop should be performing!

I've updated the bios and the ATI drivers from the AMD website, but the problem still remains. Can someone please help me figure out how to nail down this problem? I'm completely at a loss and desperately need my new system working properly!

    Thanks,

whats the resolution of the videos? I have the same problem when viewing 1080p videos, but its not that bad and I still consider it watchable, it stutters every min and only certain movies, not all, so I figured the problem was just with the videos..I guess maybe there is something wrong then

EDIT: I have the i5 580 and the problem happens on both the Intel graphics and the 5650

I sure hope something's wrong - if this is just as good as it gets I should've never bought the laptop - everything I read led me to believe video playback wouldn't be an issue with the i7 740 processor.

For me, it's unwatchable it's so choppy with 1080P, but even when I half-res a draft output of the same video, it's still terribly choppy. :( As I said, the videos play fine on my older, slower machine with less memory - that's what leads me to think something's not right here...

Have you tried checking your GPU clocks with GPU-Z while you are watching the video? Download GPU-Z from here.

Make sure your clocks are 450/800 for GPU and graphics memory respectively.

    Thanks for the replies, guys...

Remedy - GPU's at 450 mhz and memory is at 800 mhz...

Jdane - I use Vegas, Premiere and After effects, but I've even brought over ProRes 422 (mov) files out of Final Cut from my mac - all of the files exhibit the same behaviour using a variety of players...

It sounds like hardware issues, but sometimes, rarely even, the issues lie with the codecs and with them fightin' wit each uthah.

If you are feeling bored, and feel like tweaking things, I, personally, would uninstall everything and make sure all the codec support goes out the window with it. I would download just vlc or CCCP, but but but.

Follow a good guide for the recommended settings for the codecs. Most computers are totally cool with the default settings on VLC and CCCP, but sometimes not.

The i7 doesn't have the switchable graphics does it?

Nope - no switchable graphics... I've actually already reinstalled everything - did a complete clean install using the guides on these forums. :(

What if I were to post up one of the clips I'm having trouble with? Any other envy 14 users with the i7 that'd be willing to try to play the clip and see if it works on their system?
