How would we go about upgrading the Vista OS to 64 bit? Apparently had no choice of ordering 64 bit when I took advantage of the free vista upgrade from xp professional.

Now I want the 64 bit instead of the 32 bit, but I have the 32 bit CD. Anyway to obtain the 64 Bit CD and use the 32 Bit serial I received with the Vista upgrade CD?

If you've got a retail license for Windows Vista, then you can certainly get a 64-bit DVD from Microsoft.

    Start here - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

Microsoft will ask you for the product key that was provided with your Windows Vista Business 32-bit package. If it goes through, Microsoft will ship you a 64-bit DVD. Of course, shipping and handling fees will apply. You can use the same product key to activate the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Business once you've installed it.

I'm also thinking about getting vista 64bit. I got a dv5 with vista premium home 32bit on it. What's the easiest and cheapest way to upgrade to 64bit? Would it involve formatting the drive with the operating system on?

Yes it would involve formatting the hard drive as you cannot upgrade any edition of vista across architectures (i.e going from 32bit to 64bit). Once you get the 64bit disc you will have to start fresh with a clean install.

Ok. So if i get my hands on a 64bit vista anytime disk I will be able to change to 64bit?

I have been told that because i got my laptop from HP, I will have to buy a retail disk, is this true?

One more question, I have my harddrive partitioned into two. One partition for windows and progs, the other for data (music, videos, etc.). Would formatting both be necessary?

All you need is a vista 64 disk. It doesn't matter which one. Hell, you could download one from bittorrent because you have a license key already. And you only need to format the partition with windows on it.
