After installing the Ricoh 5-1 Card Reader driver that I got from HP's website (this is a clean install), I encountered some serious problems on restart. First windows explorer asked to restart and continued to do so like 3 times until I got the BSOD. I uninstalled the drivers and now I'm still getting errors, like "Windows sidebar stopped working" and anomolies in the screen at startup. Should I start from scratch and skip this step? Please help.

Try booting in safe mode, hit f8 on start up and select the first option "safe mode"
Check your boot log as it may contain information about a driver conflict relevant to the issue. To access your log click start then run then type "eventvwr" and click ok.
Any errors should show up there giving you an idea of what the problem is.

    Hope this helps :)

Another possability would be to use the System Configuration utility to narrow down the cause of the problem. Help for this is available in the utility, bottom right, try Diagnostic startup.

    what drivers did you un-install?

the Internet Explorer restart issue is because of the Yahoo Add-ons. Easy fix, just open Explorer browser-Tools-Manage Add Ons-Enable or Disable Add ons-then when the window opens up, Disable EVERYTHING that says YAHOO.

until MS figures out a way to play nicely w/ the Yahoo Add-ons that is what you have to do for now.

since you did a fresh install, best thing to do is make sure you install All Critical Updates from Windows Update, then download and install Service Pack 1 and continue installing the rest of your programs.

then if you're feeling frisky...head on over to this thread,

it'll take about 30-45mins of your time but so worth it.

i did that and now am loving Vista more than ever. runs like XP.

    good luck!
