Not sure if I should put this in this forum or the Vista unattended..
I just got a new laptop, a HP dv9500t, and it has all kinds of junk on it. I would like to do a new install with the Vista recovery disk. Only problem is I'm guessing all their junk is on the 5GB+ DVD as well. I downloaded Vlite and tried to use it to edit the disc but it says it can't find the expected files. Is there a way to edit the disc at all? Has anyone done this on a HP recovery disc? I just want to create a new disc with just Vista and drivers. Thanks

I think this might help. I read in a past post that you can remove all the bloatware by just reinstalling a clean version of vista. but because HP is dumb and wont give you the install cd's you might try to get this CD from compUSA. I belive it extracts the CD key from your os and then installs a clean version of your desired os. here is the link. http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=52591952&pfp=XSELLCUSTVW
Shop around the site a bit there are 64-bit versions also. hope this helps.

Okay, so that is basically just a media disc? I should be able to use my existing activation with it? Or my existing CD keys? If so that is awesome and well worth $5. Though it frustrates me that I paid the money for the HP restore disc when I bought the laptop.

It seems MS has one too https://na.windowsanytimeupgradestore.com/WAU_DIRECT/Purchase.aspx

Well if that is what I need I'll order it and use that.
Lithus, I did read those, but I didn't understand what they meant by a Vista Anytime Upgrade disc, I thought they just meant my HP recovery disc. Thanks for the advice though..

I have one more question, I know the guide mentioned this but it was unclear to me, can the CD key I got with the laptop work with the anytime upgrade disc? For instance if I was dumb and forgot to backup my activation info would I be able to install with the anytime disc and be able to activate using my cd key over the phone?

xenon - Yes, you should have no problem activating it over the phone. I did the same thing for my first two Vista restores using the Anytime Upgrade DVD and the CD key on the bottom of the laptop, and all it cost me to activate was the time and patience to call MS. The only question asked was "...on how many systems do you have this software installed..." or something very similar to that. I have since been using the script which backs up the key and certificate and I really like it.

So just to get this straight.. does HP include the anytime upgrade disc with the notebook, or must it be purchased from a third party (like CompUSA) or Microsoft?

If you are talking about using the HP recovery disk purchased from HP, I would recommend against it. Many including myself (4x with 2 different disks) have try that it fails after it destroys the recovery partition on the hard drive. If you want a clean install, follow the clean install thread. I did and it works well.
