I just did a clean install of Vista and after updates and what not got up to SP1 and some updates after that. I didn't any applications yet, but when I checked to see how much disk space was left after updates I noticed that it said I have already used up about 40gb.

Before any updates the amount of disk space used was about 11gb. It seems a bit too that the updates and SP1 used up 30gb. Am I missing something here?

On a side note I read in this forum that maybe its the recovery backups that could be the culprit. If that is the case is there a way to delete or disable this?

Take a look at my disk space guide to see where it has probably gone. Most likely the space was used up by volume shadow copy saving older versions of the files that changed when the updates were applied. Unless you desperately need that space to store other data, don't worry about it until you /are/ desperate for the space.
