Sumthing really weird just happened to my Notebook. I locked my account and left the computer on for 10 minutes, when i got back and logged in, the user account was different. The background and shortcuts were normal but when i opened the start menu there was nuthing there. Everytime i tried to open a picture it said "the extension isn't supported"...MSN messenger was acting up aswell, it wouldn't sign in even though i was connected to the internet...

I restarted and now it's working fine.

I also noticed that my hard drive's starting to heat up for no reason...i don't know whether it's just me noticing coz recently i arranged a bunch of perfume boxes under the notebook in such a way that all the vents were exposed. Before i did this i never touched the bottom of the notebook, the palmrest is fine though.

My question is what the hell is goin on with the OS and does it have anything to do with the heat?

XP is working fine here for me, I know that's not what you want to hear but since you were logged on to the internet let me ask you, do you have an antivirus and firewall running?

yes, I have windows firewall and AVG antivirus, I'm very cautious when it comes to viruses, I scan the computer regularly and update the software very frequently....I don't think it's a virus problem rather something to do with the OS or the heat.. But I'm not sure hence the post :p

Vista is working fine here, been using it for near on 6 months now with no problems, apart from having to learn the new protocols and yes learning can be difficult but I guess that's part of the fun!

Geez what's wrong with most people going on like Vista is the O/S from hell.

This may not have anything to do with your problem but I JUST finished reading an article about a most recent update AVG released that contained a bug.

The update mistakenly identified a critical OS file as a trojan and either deleted it or asked the user to delete it. This causes severe system problems and the article said that AVG is actively working on a solution and to visit their website for more info.

S_P_Q_R: i don't think that at all, in fact i think it's amazing and waay better than XP. But i'm slowly changing my mind because of all the glitches. Like, my CD drive didn't work unless i restarted the NB with the CD inside it...XP wouldn't do that..

deeastman: thanks for the info, i vaguely remember it detecting sumthing a couple of weeks back but i can't remember whether it was on the notebook or Desktop :-S...the website said it causes issues with booting up and something about a reboot cycle, that definitely isn't the issue.

Try running a disk check to check for errors.

That doesn't sound like its working correctly. have you called hp about it?

i know on my desktop machine, i have to have the xp disc in the drive for it to boot right, i know that's not right, but i haven't spent enough time trying to figure out the problem yet. i know it has to do with the boot loader, sector or something, but not there yet. no time really.. unless someone here knows how to fix that problem.
