Hello all..
I own an HP DV4T with the following specs:
# Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
# Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
# 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
# 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
# 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP
I have noy uninstalled any of the programs that come with the PC. This means that I am running Norton. I have installed Spybot and Firefox.
When I turn it on it takes 90 seconds to show me the login screen. Is this too long?
I should say that a program called "Viewpont manager" is unavailable in the Control Panel.
-
90 seconds is a little long.
On a clean vista machine with less oomph than yours I typically see boot times of about 55 to 65 seconds.
I recently reinstalled a machine for someone and noted that a couple of programs add significantly to the boot times--two of the worst are Norton (or any antivirus, but Norton was the worst) and itunes. Both added about 30 seconds each. -
That sounds very long to me. Boo to bloatware.
Gerry, he isn't even talking to the desktop, just to the login screen.

I do have both Norton and iTunes installed. May that be it.
Furthermore, I intend to use Decrapifier to clean my PC... where do I find a list of programs that are safe to remove in my system. -
All HP Products basically. I have none on my laptop. All preinstalled crap is uninstallable.
-
Well guys... I decided to do a reinstall... It now boots up in 1 minute, seconds more, seconds less.... So big improvement... now I just have to remove the bloatware.
-
It takes about 45 sec for me.
-
A clean install will give you boot times of 30-50 seconds. Uninstalling the programs wont be as good as a clean install.
-
If I go into the events log I get two warnings:

Does anyone hnow what this means??? -
Yes, basically, it means your system is shutting down in 27 seconds and starting in 77 seconds.
There is a lot of additional information which is being pulled from the Application and Service Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnostics-Performance > Operational events
I don' even know why that is throwing a warning. All of your degredation events are false. My guess is that this is taking a little longer than expected so it's throwing a warning.
Since you just reinstalled, though, I wouldn't worry about it. Over the next few defragment cycles windows will move boot files to better locations to improve performance. -
Thank you very much for your help.

How do you access the "event log"?
