I was converting WMAs on Itunes, when avast had a pop up and then i got a blue screen of death. It was too quick I couldn't see what the pop up said, but then I got the BSOD and i shut down. I then had to run a check disk because it said there might be a problem. But when it gets to 8% it just hangs, I let it sit there for almost an hour without it budging. Anyone know what the culprit might be?

Any extra information you can provide will make it easier for us to help you figure out what is going wrong. Can you list what OS you are currently running? Windows XP/Vista etc. There are two possible culprit's, its either the HD or your Anti-Virus. I would recommend disabling your Anti-Virus first as its not uncommon for AV's to cause issue's that lead to BSOD's.

    1. How long have you had the HD you are using?

    2. Can you access safe mode?

    3. Etc.

    ----------

Possible Solution 1. Sounds like a possible Anti-Virus Issue. If you can, I would suggest skipping the Check Disk. There should be a notification saying to stop Check Disk press any key within the next few seconds.

If the above does not work and/or you have trouble accessing Windows, then attempt the below. Be very careful and only disable the Anti-Virus startup entry, disabling other entries can cause issue's. However just disabling your Anti-Virus from starting at initial boot should cause no harm/issue's to arise.

I would suggest is try starting up in Safe Mode. Most machines (though not all) just press F8 when first powering the computer on. Once you are in Windows under Safe Mode (Assuming you are using Windows) you can attempt the following.

Go to Start > Run > Msconfig

After typing Msconfig in the run box hit enter and it should bring the System Configuration Utility. Under the Startup Tab there should be an entry for your antivirus. Simply uncheck that entry and hit apply for it to save the changes.

    ----------

Possible Solution 2. It could be that your HD is dying, or just has some bad sectors. In general though it is never good when a check disk fails to complete. How long have you had the current HD you are using? It is not uncommon to have to replace your HD every 3-5 Year's, especially if you use your computer often. Try restarting the check disk and see if it always sticks at 8%. It could be hitting an unrecoverable sector on your HD that is just completely gone.

    ----------

I hope the above possible solutions help, though we could really use some more information to help narrow down the issue.

    Thanks

Thank you very much for your help. I am using VISTA Home Premium, I have had my laptop for about 2 weeks now. I can access my desktop, I just cancel the disk check and it works fine. Only when I let it run does it hang.

What I did was, I pressed F11 to get the HP like diagnostic tools, I ran the disk check from there. It took forever, but it didn't hang. It didn't find any errors, at least it didn't alert me to any, now I don't get nagged to run disk check. Thanks for your help!!!
