First off I just want to say that this is my first post. Ok, my problem is the obvious "I want to install XP, but it won't let me" problem. My laptop is a dv6324us with an AMD Turion TL-50, a gig of ram and nvidia integrated graphics. When I try to install XP, it loads the setup files and then BSoD. Contacted HP and they said to disable SATA. Can't do that, there is no option. They then told me to use killdisk. Same BSoD still. I've figured out through research how to slipstream SATA drivers in using nLite. Problem is that every single how to I've read deals with Intel CPUs and not AMD. HP's website was no help whatsoever. Can someone please tell me where to get these SATA drivers? I'm now stuck with this really crappy OS that forgets how to boot twice a week (seriously), has to restart after wirelessly connected for an hour otherwise stops recognizing it, Firefox mysteriously won't start but IE works instantly. Vista has been updated and I run Spybot and AVG every day. Ubuntu works a ton better (and faster, if only wine worked better). Sorry for the long post, but this has been really frustrating for the last 4 months since I bought the stupid thing. I have XP Home Edition SP2, I do not have an external floppy (I have an external HD however; I've had to restore Vista's image 8 times or so) if that matters. I appreciate any help on this matter. Any Ubuntu users out there?![]()

Mine Vista does not suck at all. Just make a clean install of it. Here is the thread around, explaining everything about the procedure. But if you want XP, you will most likely be able to put it too..The thread about it here as well. Good luck!

My only real question was where to get AMD SATA drivers for my laptop. I can't find them anywhere. Everybody has Intel

You disabled SATA in the BIOS?
-
Actually, you really shouldnt need to disable SATA or find SATA drivers for your system. I have similar spec system and XP SP2 installs without any issues. The BSOD might be realted to something else. Is the XP SP2 CD good?? Have you tried installing it on a different machine just to check if the CD is defective or not.

I agree most of the drivers issue have been worked out and I am actually liking vista now -
Originally I installed XP on previous laptops, but tried it on my latest HP and it's been great. -
up the ram vista is fine. 1 gig may not be enough for your liking, I had 1 gig on my laptop it thought it was fine, I did upgrade to 2 gig just cuz i could

Originally I thought memory was the problem, but vista is really fussy most of the time. I can't disable SATA in the BIOS. There is no option to do so. I tried installing XP less than 10 minutes after I bought it, so I don't think the disc is defective. I'm going to try to install it again and post what the BSoD says

the problem is not Vista....the problem is your laptop specs suck. The TL-50 is a very sucky CPU. You should have got a TL-52 at a minimum. Also that 1Gb of RAM isn't going to cut it *maybe* for XP but definitely not for Vista.
I would suggest using the Recovery partition to get Vista back to the way HP installed it, then buy some more ram. If that doesn't help Vista, sell the laptop and get one that has better specs.
Sorry if this comes off harsh, I'm just being honest. -
OK, here goes my 0.3 cents ( 0.02 + 0.27 taxes).
I´m using a sempron 3500 (1.8 Ghz), and running vista business smooth an happy. So don´t blame our poor AMD processors , they do their job fine. For running vista smooth , first you need lots of patience. The OS takes several days to arrange itself and to work fine. Look for services not needed and install the latest performance and stability patches from Microsoft. Index search services takes a while to index all your stuff, during this time, your Hard Disk is working as a crazy. After doing a clean install do a manual defragmentation, it helps a lot.
Vista is a great OS, and I coming from Linux, and the only Microsoft OS that could attract me is Vista. I really like it and in the beginning I got the same performance problems you said, but being a former Linux user you get accustomed to find solutions and don't despair easily. So give the damn OS more time before sending it to the garbage.
Vista sucks and XP won't install
