On October 26 from what I have been hearing if you buy a notebook you will be able to get a free upgrade to vista when it comes out. What happens to the people who have bought notebooks in the past month??? (They are screwed.) I guess if you still can return them in the grace period and really what vista you could do that. HP should come up with a better plan then October 26. A lot of consumers like myself are going to be unhappy if they don't
-
What about customers in Canada? Lets say I purchase a notebook near, but after, the October 26th date from an online store. Will I still get that "coupon" for a free Windows Vista?
-
I think it is a really bad policy. What about people who bought a PC today?
If they waited till tomorrow, they would get a free upgrade to Vista according to Microsoft website ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/expressupgrade.mspx). Today they get nothing.
This will be interesting to watch as I expect huge backlash and lot of angry customers. -
HP told me to keep checking this page out http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/307885-0-0-225-121.html for updates on Vista.
-
I already know someone that canceled orders for 2 HP's due to the timing issue. He may re-order, but that's a risk HP and other vendors are taking if they won't honor it for people at least within the return grace period.
I'm waiting until tomorrow to order, just to be safe.

I received my notebook on the 16th of this month. I just ran the vista upgrade advisor. Two of my usb devices will not work with vista and a lot of other issues to be resolved. HP still has a lot of work to do to get their computers and notebooks to work with vista. {Drivers} When HP sends your upgrade of vista and you install it do you lose xp in the upgrade. All you have is recovery disc. Not a full version of xp that came with the notebook.
-
is there a question in there or are you stating the obvious?
-
Just spoke with HP Sales....
As far as Vista, 10/26-3/25(?) purcjases of either XP Media or XP Pro will receive a certificate for FREE upgrade to Vista Express when it is released. XP Home versions will NOT get the upgrade. -
I dont think its free read this:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/oct06/10-24TechGuaranteePR.mspx
I saved over $7o with app so i think i will buy but dunno which version will be good on a 6000t -
Unless HP releases updates to QP, it will break on Vista, no matter what. And even if HP does release update to QP, I am very worried about whehter HP will make it publicly available to all dv2000t users. -
HP has a lot of issues to resolve with vista. Run vista upgrade advisor and you will see how many issues you have to correct on your notebook, quick play being one of them.
-
I'm waiting to buy a lappy. I haven't even started looking at buying until a few weeks ago and even I knew a month or two ago that MS would offer free upgrades at the end of october. You can't blame HP for your inability to find answers that are readily available online.
-
I just called HP here in Switzerland to know whether they would also have the deal with MicrobeSoft to allow a free Vista upgrade when available and, surprisingly, they said yes.
You get a voucher that gives you a free copy of a Vista CD when this latter will be released.
The only thing that is not free of charge is the shipping fee, which is about 10 bucks here.
That's pretty cool

I would definitely hold off on getting Vista.
I just ran RC2 on my dv5030us before I shipped it out (it scratched the disc while installing!but its still readable and it installed perfectly) and it still detected my GPU as having 640MB of video memory and my system as only have 256MB of RAM. 128MB of RAM seems to have disappeared according to Vista. So yeah...
-
I just got off the phone with HP and as far as the vista upgrade, HP will only offer the upgrade to people who bought there notebooks after the 26th. They are standing firm on the date. People who bought there notebooks before the 26th and are still in the grace period can return there notebook and reorder. I think anybody who is in the grace period should do that. I belong to a notebook club and we have three people including myself who have received new notebooks this month.
-
Even if one can't use Vista due to PC limitation, there is no harm in having a legal copy of it that you can possibly sell on eBay for some $$$.
I would like to see the "fine" print on this offer. -
I just received my notebook this mornin...how shud i proceeed with getting a copy of vista when its available. How much is the grace period. I also purchased a free printer. How does that work?

Hey, first post here.
Interested in getting a dv6174ea (6000series) here in UK. I have called the HP here and they have no idea re the vista upgrade voucher. I have also called Micro Anvika (seemed to be the only person here to sell the model I want) and they have no idea as well!
Do you know they will have similar deals here in UK? -
check the hp cto ..u can now get vista free with any os that you buy.
here are the details.
Windows XP Media Center Edition + Windows Vista Capable PC = Windows Vista Home Premium = FREE!
Windows XP Professional Edition + Windows Vista Capable PC = Windows Vista Business = FREE!
Windows XP Home Edition + Windows Vista Capable PC = Windows Vista Home Basic = FREE! -
I believe HP has a 30 day return policy. In November they have a return policy for Christmas which is extended to the middle of January. That is real good. Take advantage of whatever you can, cause in the long run HP is going to screw you somewhere down the line. Just look at what happened to one of HP's board
members. -
-
It's also offered in Switzerland.
Steve -
What about laptops you buy from ccity or bbuy are they eligible too?
-
should i return my laptop to get the one with the vista upgrade?
-
That's an individual choice. I personally would . I had an problem with hp and just got off the phone with a case manager at HP and told him I received my notebook on the 16th (his name was cliff) and all he could say to me was have as nice day. he could of said that's HP policy and there is nothing I can do about it. have a nice day////// Not a good answer. Like I said in previous comments get what you can from HP while you can.
-
If HP was smart which I no they are not, they could do something like this.
Anyone who received a notebook from October 1st would get a coupon for a free upgrade to vista. This would take care of the grace period.Customers who purchased a notebook or computer from January 1 2006 to September 30, 2006 would get a $50.00 coupon toward a Vista upgrade. Prior to 2006 and have proof of a hp computer would get a $25.00 coupon toward an upgrade. HP could setup a website to distribute the vista upgrades. This way they would get the profit that a retail store would get, if you bought the upgrade there.
Bottom line here is, it would cost HP next to nothing and maybe even make a small profit. -
Well, I think that finally, HP has nothing to do with the MicrobeSoft policy.
For MS, it's clear that they have to establish a begin date and an ending date for the offer. HP has no way to decide for them.
What you suggest, offering coupons for the grace period, would mean that they could pre-date them for MicrobeSoft to honnor them. I'm not sure that this would work. Don't forget that HP has to buy the OS anyway and can't buy them and sell them to you for $25 or $50.
Actually, I have been looking to buy my new laptop for 3 months but have been waiting for the day where the Vista upgrade would be included with the machine. Now that day has arrived, I'm going to order my laptop soon.
It's also a personal decision to decide to buy a new machine when you know you're close to a major change in the computing world, a change like Vista. So it's up to you to wait a little bit or to skip the possible free upgrade.
I know that HP will have new versions of their laptops in early November, so here again, I wait and will buy mine in mid-November.
You can't wait forever, but in this case, I had no hesitations.
Steve -
i ordered mine yesterday (the 25th), and it says it wont be built until nov 8th. do you guys still think ill be eligible for the upgrade?
-
^ no, microsoft regulates the rebates, and only those purchased on the 26th and on are eligible.... idk, if you have the cash, cancel and purchase or something like that.
-
Cancelled Order Then Reordered.
Yesterday evening I ordered a dv600t and at the end of the transaction I asked are there any deals or discounts I forgot to ask about. The answer was NO. Last night I debated whether I should have ordered the T-5500 rather than the T-2050 processor. This morning when I went on the hp web site to see what a T-5500 would cost, I saw the notice about the free Visa Upgrade. I called customer service and they wouldn't allow me to have the coupon, they said it only applied after Oct 26, 2006. So, I cancelled my order and at the same time reordered with the upgrade processor. So my delivery has slipped one day, I now have will get the coupon.

I get a free copy of Vista from my institution, but I have to wait a couple months for all the site licenses to be taken care of. I haven't really even looked into what Vista is claiming to offer, I guess the time for that is approaching. It would seem like HP should just take the date they set (10/26) and shift it back to include the computers purchased within the return grace period. Seems like they are going to end up costing themselves more by not doing this, I'm pretty sure they can only offer returns as refurbs regardless of condition, so they take a hit there, plus prices have come down slightly in the last month on identical configurations.
-
I hope HP did not charge your credit card for two orders. HP is the only company I no that charges your credit card at the time of the order. Most companies charge your card when the item is shipped. Some notebooks take up to 4 weeks to be built.HP could take up to a week to credit you back with your first canceled order.
-
I can only hope people who bought there notebooks in the grace period return them and reorder. HP gets hit for shipping both ways and maybe some of the people will add or subtract some items they did or did not like.I hope the new notebook costs less. HP also will have to sell the return notebooks as refurbs.
