Anything you can do to make the volume controls not fail?

I recommend just pressing your finger on the very left (for lowering volume) orvery right (for raising) and then holding it there to change the volume, rather than sliding your finger (assuming your talking about the volume controls on the dv5?). Also make sure you have the latest QuickTouch, Quick Launch Buttons and Audio drivers. :)
