Hello, I am soon to be going to college, taking a major in physics, and minors in philosophy and astronomy. I have looked at several companies, and I am choosing between the IBM's and Voodoo's.

First, I was curious if both and how good their compatibility is with most distro's of Linux.

I will not be playing next-generation games, but I will be using a gig or more of RAM for games such as Planetside, and need a lot of hardrive space for storing.

Besides for the free-time Planetside gaming, I will use the internet, playing java games, typing, researching, and printing.

If you know any other good companies for notebooks, please refer me to them here.

    Good companies:
    IBM
    Fujitsu
    Acer
    Emachines
    HP/Compaq
    maybe Toshiba

    That just my opinion.
IBM and Fujitsu are the best quality.
    Acer is all around good.
Emachines and HP/compaq are good bang for your buck
    Toshiba is pretty good too.
You may want to stear clear of dell.

Unless you really NEED (as in can't live without) the little bit of extra power that the boutique machines offer, I would go with a high end mass market system. You'll save a lot of money and hardly miss any of the extra performance.

they have super great notebooks 4 an extremely cheap price. all their models that r 15+ inch screens offer extreme greatness. u can get a notebook with 128 MB ATi Radeon 9700, 1.7 GHZ Dothan (pentium m), 60 gb 7200 RPM, 1 gig of ram about 1800 bucks or less, with xp pro. They also sell age of mythology, rise of nations, and fligt simulator 2004 for 6 bucks each as an optional extra. These are totally custom built, even the desktops are unbelievably cheap and poweruful.
