Do not order the extra AC adapter. I've been through hell (and 3 incompatible adapters). They do not sell additional AC adapters that are compatible. Both the 65W and 90W adapters do not work. They ended up just giving me a refund for the extra AC adapter (+$50 credit). Now I have to call HP parts (which apparently is not part of hpshopping.com) to order an ac adapter.

I'd be very interested in hearing about your further adventures on this. I'd like to get a car adapter and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a universial adapter that works with the new Dv4000s.

    Saga continues. Listen to this...
There is currently no HP d\/4000 AC adapter that can be purchased from any HP-associated entity. Yes, you heard me. I was told by both HPShopping.com and HP Parts to browse the web for a 3rd-party adapter (by Targus or some crap like that). Anyway, I called tech support and attempted to have him send me a replacement part. I was on hold for 10 minutes. Then I was disconnected.

I have spent approx 4-5 hours on the phone with HP.

    I'm calling back....

I know this may sound st00pid, but on my 90W AC adaptor (dv4000 w/X700) it has a sticker that states replace with HP part number xxxxx-xxx (I'm away and can't remember the number).

Can't you order this part by part number (instead of from shopping.hp.com) from any HP authorized survice center (even online)?

I can post the number later, if you like.

I know it's difficult to believe, but it's true. HP does not sell this part. I have the part number as well on my sticker. HP has confirmed that they do not sell this (hpshopping.com and the hpparts store).

this is really wierd, I've had my dv4000 for about 2 months now, came with a 65w hp power supply, its getting wayyy too hot, so i talked to online support and he said he would send me a replacement, i forgot to ask wether it would be a 65 or 90w, im guessing the dv4000 is suppose to have a 65w since thats what it came with?? should i talk with them again and make sure they are sending me a 90w?

No. They apparently changed to a 90W (which they don't carry) when the x700 was offered on 9/29/05. Previous to that, the 65W was good.

ok, well i guess ill be getting a new 65w power supply in 3-5 days (and will probably be just as hot as the new one i have that came with the laptop) ohwell...

one thing good about talking with tech support was that i did get to find out how to resolve the fan running too much issue, but i havent ran it enough to see if anythings changed

it may not help now, but to add to thread for future use:

"Replace with HP SPARE 403900-001 (bar code) 9i05A1"

Good luck to those looking for a replacement.

Update (not that anyone cares). I have spent another few hours on the phone with *tech support*. HP Parts suggested that I call tech support. I asked tech support about getting a replacement part, and gave them the replacement part # from my powersupply. They said no problem, then asked for my serial number from my d\/4000. It turns out that my serial number doesn't exist. My computer doesn't exist. They are going to call me back in 24 hours (supposedly) while they research the fact that I claim to have a computer that doesn't exist.

If my d\/4000 computer dies tomorrow, tech support cannot provide support for me. I love my d\/4000, but HP is teh suck.

according to tech support at hp, to fix your fan that seems to be running too much, restart, hit F10 at start, go to the exit tab, select "load defaults"
restart the computer, go to control panel, system, click hardware tab, goto device manager, go to system devices, and uninstall "acpi fixed ....." , restart your computer and it will reinstall this driver, and once again restart...and you should be good to go...according to hp that is !

The part # = 403900-001 and it isn't available online. HP has confirmed that they do not sell these. What part # do you have?

Here's the link to the part: link

a followup to my posts about the defective power supply, just received my replacement power supply in from fedex overnight (cant beat that at all) and ive found something interesting, apparently there is a revision to the power supply that came with the dv4000 (pre x700) this is a 65w ps

    old powersupply id: 9i0581
    new "" : 9F05AD

on the back, bottom left corner of old: 5817049406
on new one: 5900585701 REV: A01

so guess there was something wrong with the original powersupplies

    Here's another update...
I spent hours on the phone with tech support. I convinced them to send me a new ac adapter because mine is "broken" (suggested by HP parts). Of course, they would charge me if I don't return the old one, so it's as good as purchasing one.
Anyway, despite my assurance that they would send me the part (based on the part # and everything), they sent me another 65W incompatible adapter that doesn't even fit. Note: this is my 5th. I repeat, 5th adapter HP has sent me that does not fit my dv4000.

They're now sending me another one. Let's hope it's lucky 6....

Oh man, I was all set to buy a DV4000. I had it all planned and was just about to hit the buy button, when I read this thread.

It's gotten nothing but great reviews from all the critics. But critics don't take things like customer service into account. And for me, bad support can be a deal breaker.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Question: is HP in general really bad on their support, or is this just an isolated instance? I'm really thinking of going with a Dell 9300 or 6000 now. (Sure, I know Dell has had no shortage of critics in the support area as well, but it certainly sounds like HP is at the very bottom!)

I've owned both a 9300 and 6000. The dv4000 is far superior in my opinion. The 9300 does run much cooler, and the battery life is better. But the screen on the dv4000 is so much better. (note: i have the matte screen, which is amazing. I do not like the brighview "mirror" screens).

Anyway, as far as support goes, Dell is much better.
Aside from my support nightmares (and the fact that HP is still selling incompatible AC adapters for their notebooks), I love my dv4000.

I think the Dv4000 is a great machine. Kark seems to be having a real problem, but one that has not confronted the vast majority of us with as yet. I've had great, medium and bad experiences with HP support...just like I've had with Gateway and Dell (actually, I've personally had much worse experience with Dell than with either HP or GW). If excellent support is your goal Apple or IBM would be a better choice for you... and would cost more as well. The other point I'd like to mention is that the Dv4000 with the X700 GPU was a very big product launch for HP and if you check this forum you'll find relatively very few threads or messages that indicate a problem with the machine. I know if you go to Dell forums you'll see ample evidence of users who have problems with their machines.

Don't mean to come off as a FanBoy, but I'm very happy with my new machine, and I think it presents a higher level of value than does the Dell 6000.

    Ok, here's another update...
Note that I now have a direct phone number and a case manager. Support has been attempting to send me a replacement ac adapter for my dv4000 because I told them mine was broken. She ordered the correct part, and then the part number was changed in the order (she claims she has no idea how it happened) and I ended up with some incompatible 65W adapter. I called her back and she put in an order for the correct 90W adapter (w/correct part #) to be overnighted to me. That was days ago. I just called her back and she said that the order in the system overrode her part# request, and then did an automatic cancel. She said that she's now unable to get me this part at all. She's going to call me back.

    So to review...
New dv4000s customized on hpshopping.com starting 9/29/05 come with an ac adapter. There is currently no way to get a replacement for this adapter if it breaks. There is also no way to order additional ac adapters for this notebook. HPShopping.com, HP Parts, and HP's tech support all have confirmed this.

    Just a warning...

update (11/1): still no ac adapter. Tech support tried to send me another one overnight back on 10/25, but the order is still stuck in "not shipped yet" on hp's site.

If anyone is successful at obtaining an additional ac adapter for the dv4000 CTO (custom ized to order via hpshopping.com) with x700 ordered >= 9/29/05, please let me know.

Also, I despite the fact that I reported this to HP weeks ago, they are still selling an incompatible ac adapter (the extra ac adapter 65w) if you order a dv4000 via hpshopping.com.
