My plan initially is to get the Envy 17 Brightview and watch Blurays and be amazed on how it would look,. But now that I purchased an Envy 14 with Radiance, is it going to be just as good watching DVD compared to Envy 17's Bluray??

Well a dvd is only 480p, that's less than 900p so it won't look as crisp at full screen, but a bluray is 1080p, larger than 900p. So you won't get the full HD effect unless you get the FHD Bright view.

A DVD full screen won't look very good on either at full screen mode though as like I said its only 480. A DVD will never look as good at Bluray.

I guess I can understand how this board might make someone think Radiance had superpowers, but it cannot make standard definition look just as good as full high definition.

I watch DVDs on my Envy 17. They look fine to me. They don't look nearly as good as blu-rays, of course. And I also tend to use software that "upconverts" the video.

So how can we watch HD Movies with a nice Radiance Screen?

Also is the drive ever going to be upgradable to a Bluray anywhere down the road, or I'm stuck with no bluray forever? Better yet are there external bluray I can attach? (sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, I just have a large collection of blurays)

As i stated today in another thread, someone replaced there optical w/ a blu-ray drive successfully. Ican't remember what thread he posted on but he stated what drive worked and where he got it. (ebay i think)

Two of us upgraded, but we were Envy 17 users. I don't know of any 14 users who upgraded to blu-ray.

As for the OP, I have an external blu-ray burner that's barely been used at all. PM me if you're interested. We can use Paypal.

There isn't an internal bluray drive for the envy 14, but like other said, external usb blurays work fine. I got one from ebay for $100 or there abouts and it was well worth it. On principal, I want bluray to be internal, but when I have short travel with my laptop, I rarely have time to watch movies anyways, on long travel it's not that big of a deal to carry the external drive for use in the hotel room.

I am big on video quality, but if battery life is your concern, digital copies are the way to go.

So if I wanted to just watch Blurays and not burning etc, do the brands matter? Or is some brand gonna look better than others somehow?

Is there anyway to actually load a blu-ray file from my desktop to my laptop? Or to ask it better, can I load a blu-ray movie from a BD disk and transfer the file to my ENVY. I have multiple movies on my itunes, but I think that would be sweet if I could get blu-ray quality over my network.

No brands don't matter. Blu-ray is blu-ray. The quality of the actual hardware may differ between brands though..reliability, durability etc.

You just need a program to rip blu-ray movies then transfer that to your Envy

Do you have a recommendation for upconverting software? Thanks.
