I am finally getting DSL and am setting up a wireless network. What brand works best for you and how far does it work.
D-Link DWL-923 Wireless Network is at zipzoom for $40, anyone know about this brand?
Any input will be greatly welcome.

I've had experience with both the D-Link brand and the Linksys brand.
I used to think the D-Links were fine and dandy, but they can be a little finiky to setup. Then once my new dv1000 wouldn't work with the MAC address filtering portion and I narrowed it down to a problem with the router and not my notebook, I bit the bullet and purchased a Linksys. As a Cisco network admin, I was impressed with the functionality in a SOHO wireless router. The user interface is user-friendly and very clean.
Needless to say, I would STRONGLY recommend spending the little bit extra money and getting a Linksys. Be sure to check for rebates. I got a WRT54G with a $10 rebate from linksys and another $10 from Circuit City (best buy also has the same deal)
Good Luck! -
I've used D-Link and I can tell you it is bad!!! Check out NETGEAR, for around 40$ you might find something, it is user friendly and works great!!!

I ended up buying a Netgear 108 wireless router and pc card kit. The router is at the far end of my house and the notebook is in an outside building about 85 feet from the router. The 108 Mbps pc card does not work at all. The wireless card that comes with the notebook works fine. The signal strength is between 400 and 500. GREAT.
I am going to sell the pc card on ebay.

Is it the general concensus that the Netgear wireless routers are good? Staples has a good deal on them this week....I was thinking about buying one for my new DV1000. Are they better than Linksys? Or at least as good?

I use the wireless D-Link with dsl and have 4 pc's all running online games most of the time all at the same time, my mom lives 3 houses away and never gets disconnected while playing sims online. I did hook up a bigger Antenna for my mom. I have no complaints about D-link.

I've had good luck with D-Link too. Their stuff from a few years ago would sometimes have problems (I'm thinking of a D-Link 100Mbps switch that keeps locking up on my brother), but their recent stuff has been very good (1Gbps switch, 802.11g AP). They used to have techs active on dslreports.com, don't know if they still do.
Still, since HP is fond of Broadcom, you might be best off getting a Linksys box with Broadcom SpeedBooster support (125Mbps or whatever it is). Linksys stuff has a high DOA rate so buy locally but if it works out of the box it'll probably stay that way. I'm not sure if Cisco's buyout of the company has helped or hurt it. -
I use an older D-Link set-up here. It's at least two and a half years old and we've never had a problem with it. I thought it was pretty easy to set up also. There are four computers on it and I could take my laptop out on the back patio (about 80 feet)and still have plenty of signal strengh.
Now...that being said, if I was to do it over, I would get a router that transmits at the 5Ghz frequency instead of the 2.4 Ghz. That's because the router and our Sony phone system (the kind with one base and four "satellite" handsets) are on the same table in my wife's office. When one of the phone handsets is in use it completely locks up the network, since they transmit in the same frequency. We've worked around it, but it's still a PITA sometimes. YMMV of course.
Good Luck.
