Just curious if any of you who purchased the 9500t considered an Inspiron 1720. They seem like very similiar machines.

i am wondering the same question. i am gonna buy either a 9500t or 1720 in the next two weeks and as a gamer, the more powerful nvidia geforce 8600m gt on the dell is more appealing as of right now.

I was thinking the same thing. From what I've read the 8600 GT is orders of magnitude above the GS. From what I can tell the Dell doesn't have a Fingerprint reader or microphone.

Well since it has a webcam option I would think that it would have a microphone.

But that is just my guess.

IT could be - I just didn't see it in the specifications.

I do think the HP is a much better looking machine. And I don't think the Dell has HDMI out.

Um. No. It is not "orders of magnitude" faster. Not even close.

COMPARISON BETWEEN Dell 1420 vs. HP DV2500T
so you're saying you would have gotten the dell had it been out before?

cuz i'm in the same spot. I just ordered the dell with a kickass configuration but still can't help but wonder about the HP dv2500t...if both were the same price, which they are, which one?

I mean the styling of the dv2500t just screams "hey look at me, look at me now! look at my laptop..." but the dell is sort of dormant power, like you know you have it why flont it sort of thing.

But what I do like about the HP is the fingerprint scanner + lightscribe...., HOWEVER, the dell has a 2MP camera whereas the HP only 1.3, and it has the option of the T7500 (which I purchased) for same price as HP T7300, plus it has the 7200 RPM drive.

ALso the HP has HDMI out, but it's not like the Dell is lackign Tv -out as it has S-video out, of course not as crisp as HDMI but, meh... The dell weighs a negligible .4 lbs more than the HP and may be slightly bigger, but it will last longer in terms of durability because of the magneseum alloy case whereas the HP is just nice looking plastic.

ALso, don't like the touchpad on the HP though as it feels too grainy, not smooth...don't know what the dell feels like yet just ordered it...

    Holy thread revival :D

reason im going 95xx dell bloomin lead times.

I was waiting a month from 29th july for a vostro 1700 (which are supposed to have less of a lead time) and was called up yesterday to be told it had been put back another 2 weeks. My reply was a simple "please cancel my order"

I called up hp, got through to a nice scottish lass, who put my order on the system and confirmed they had stock DV9574ea (UK here) and that i will have it by Friday.

    Dell 0
    HP 4

This will be my 4th hp laptop at home from hp. I have always had IBM TP's for work.

Currntly have at home a dv6000 (dv6190eu) and a dv 5000 (5017ea) and i had another 5000 stolen from my car :( a dual core amd turion.

pretty much why i bought my dv2500 i needed a laptop and dell's specs at the time were no where close to hp's plus the hp looks nicer to me. Don't get me wrong my girlfriend just got the dell 1420 in midnight blue i specd it out for her great pc either way 1420 or 2500 your gonna get a great pc once you remove the crap ware which i must say dell did have a lot less than my hp :(. but what i do like about my hp is somebody here posted a file i added to my itunes support folder which lets me use my media buttons to control Itunes even when its minimized i currently cant find a file for my girlfriends dell but I'm sure it will turn up eventually But either way i love them both

I thought this was gonna become an HP vs Dell flame war. Thank god we are adults!!

My cousin has an HP 15" and I have a Dell 14". Everyone is always comparing and contrasting. Since we live in Austin, EVERYONE here has a Dell, so her HP tends to get more attention :(

Interesting thread you have here. I've actually been in the same boat, trying to decide between an Inspiron and one of the HP DV9000 series. The HP's winning, partly because of the nightmare shipping delays Dell's experiencing and partly because I've been using an HP desktop for the last four years without ANY problems.

I will be honest, the deal breaker for me that made me choose my hp 2500t over the dell, was the look. :D

Well, the specs are not bad either. I'm not a heavy gamer, and plus i already have a desktop for gaming.

So my dv2500t is to show off :p (yeah beat me), and the rest of the stuff i can do on my desktop.

Meh, but whatever fits your need, go with it.

If the specs are the same or good enough...HP is just nicer looking, feels like better quality and are thiner.

I just ordered the 9500. Looked at the Dell. HP offered the 7200 hard drive, Dell did not. Dell has the superior graphics card, though you might be able to overclock the HP card and close the margins. If you are a big gammer neither machine is ideal. For all around use I prefer the faster hd. Plus, as of yesterday, HP's pricing waas lower then the Dells, esp. w/the 20% off coupon from HP.

Dell has a solid build rep, but I have not seen any significant complaints re HP. --- I went for a long warranty in any event.

Hey - I just thought I'd update this thread....

I ended up buying neither. I boughta Toshiba X205. Dell wasn't really an option because of the shipping times, and I eventually ruled the HP out because of the lackluster video card. That's why I'm upgrading now - the limited video capabilities of my current notebook. I didn't want to be in the same position in a year.

    Thanks for all your responses!

I bought a DV6000 this spring vs. anything by Dell, mainly because of extremely poor experience with Dell customer service and Dell quality. I would do the same today, given a choice between the new HP's vs. the new Dells. I guess if you don't mind waiting until the Apocalypse for your new laptop, a Dell is probably as good as an HP. Check the Dell forums for more information on that. That being said, I have an ancient Inspiron (7 years old) that has been as reliable as the sunrise -- it just took 3 months for Dell to ship it to me, by which point it was 3 months obsolete. My office-mate has a Dell Latitude (business quality, folks) that has had mobo/hard drive replaced 3 times in the last 2 years.

Overall, I'm reasonably happy with HP build quality and performance -- obviously this evaluation is subject to change at any minute -- at which point I'll have to try a Sony or ASUS -- anything but Dell.

Am I the only one who thinks the Dell Inspirons feel cheap? I went to a Dell store yesterday (mostly because I'm more indecisive than I'd like to admit) and played around with a 1720, typing on it and picking it up. It felt a lot heavier and was a bit more awkward to me than the HP I want to buy.

Could just be me, though. :D

I just purchased a Dell 1520 but am hedging because of all I have read on their delays. I placed my order on 8/3 and the estimated ship date was set at 9/4. Now with the HP coupon that is out and I could get the dv6500t Special Edition for a good price. Do these manufacturers release new models every year? If that is the case, I may be better off keeping my 1520 and waiting for the new systems next year to go with HP. I'm torn on what to do. Any suggestions?

I'm waiting for my Inspiron 1720 to arrive with some ambivalence, as I really wanted to go with HP this time around. Graphics card was a deal-breaker for me- as much as I like the design of the dv9500t and wanted to avoid ordering from Dell, I just couldn't justify paying the same price (actually a bit more, after I played Dell's stupid game and applied their "coupons") for a lower-powered graphics option.

markheus, the Toshiba looks like a terrific machine, but it was way out of my price range.

The graphics card was the clincher for me as well. I briefly looked at the Dell and while it seemed like a nice machine - I didn't to wait months to get it (who knows what state I'll be in by the time they get around to shipping it)

I really like the deisgn of the new HPs... and it took a lot to convince myself not to get it. HP has a great price point and I don't think people would mind paying a bit more for a nice gaming graphics card.

    Good luck with your Dell!

Hey, HP is still putting the 6150 se into its machines and charging as if it were a 8600M GT! I bought a TX1000 and couldn't believe the crappy graphics card 1 got with the crappy 1 gib ram, no fingerprint reader, no bluetooth, etc. for a whopping $1,150. Damned impulse buys!
