    WIFI speed question (zv6000)

    I just bought a hp zv6000 laptop. I connected to the wifi network at my school, the shcool computers are getting like 11mb/s (yes, that's mb). But when I connect to the network wirelessly I'm only getting 700k/s. Is there anything I can do to increase the speed? Do I need a better wireless card? Thanks.

    Your best bet would be to connect to another wireless network (a friend's, or family) and check the speed there. Are the school computers all connected via wireless? Very strange that they all get the most optimal speed for a 802.11b network..

    If you have a spare wireless card, you can always give it a "go" but I wouldn't drop any change on that until you check another wireless network that may have less interferance. Are you using the integrated Wireless that comes with the ZV6000 or is it a PCMCIA card?

    And to clarify things, you're talking about 700K or 700k? Kilobits or kilobytes? and the 11mb your computers in school are getting..is that megabytes or megabits?

    Just to clarify some things...

    When click/hover your mouse over the wireless network icon does the "Speed" read out as 700k or are you looking at download speeds??

    If it is download speeds then they are about right. There is some problem if the connection speed is listed as 700K.

    All wireless cards based on 802.11g standard can connect at a maximum of 54mb/s whereas the 802.11b based cards can connect at a max of 11mb/s.
    Wired networks connect at max of 100 or 1000mb/s. But internet speeds are way slower than what these wireless cards are built to handle. So you will not have download speeds of 54mb/s or even 11mb/s
