First of all, installing Windows 7 as a primary OS is a bad idea long term. The reason is because RC1 is only fully functional until June 1, 2010. Secondly, I'm not certain you are understanding the partition thing. Creating a separate partition will essentially carve away part of the hard drive space for typically an additional OS on the same drive - you keep your original OS. You can always format your drive and wipe out the Vista partition, although I don't recommend it.

To more specifically answer your question: when you insert your disk, Windows 7 Installation has a built in partion manager that will help you create the new partition (thus saving your vista partition), or allow you to format the entire drive with Windows 7. I made my Windows 7 partition only 20gb (because I'm just playing with it on the side), so I don't know about the Vista partition limit.

As long as you have burned your backup discs, you should be able to restore Vista using recovery discs.

I run 3 operating systems on my dv7t-1000: Vista Home Premium, Ubuntu, and Windows 7 RC1. I still use Vista as my primary OS, but am given the option of the other two on bootup (contemplating going virtual box for the other two in the near future). Windows 7 and Vista see each other's partitions so transfering data between the two OS's is a breeze. Going to Win7 as a primary OS is a bad idea long term.

Vista slow and buggy on the dv7t??? Ok....

One thing you might want to try is getting a copy of partition magic. I've know several people who use it and like it, others across the web hate it. It's worth looking into.

Yes, you can go to win 7 as a primary OS and get a key later on if that is your desire.

If you install as a primary, you will lose the ability to recover using the recovery partition, as the bootloader for vista is replaced with win 7's.

If you have recovery disc's, either made ones that function, or bought them from HP, then you are good to go in that respect.

The only thing I've found on my DV7 (1240us) is that win 7 sees the sata drives as removable, which was not the case in the HP imaged vista install.

This is not bothersome except that the protectsmart HD protection will then fail to work with the drive, as it is not configured for removables.
