i'm buying the new 6730b notebook.
i just can't decide which resolution would be better for me - the best would be wxga+, but since there's no such in croatia - i need help choosing between those two...

the real question is - how bad is it if i downscale a WSXGA+ resolution to WXGA or WXGA+? or can i adjust the font and graphics otherwise? (DPI settings...)

    so: WSXGA+ (WVA) or WXGA?

    tnx 4 all your help

If you'll be using Vista, you could just adjust the DPI settings so that text would be bigger if you're screen is a high-resolution one.

yes, i heard about that.. and with the XP there are some problems with that, aren't they? :/

have they fixed the bugs on vista? which version is the most reliable (ultimate)?

i see you have one on your own lap... but you also have a 17" monitor :)
    i'm buying a 15.4-er

Do you plan on watching any movies at all? playing games?

If so, then get the WSXGA!!!! That's an order!

    :) sir yes sir :D

not so much gaming (coz there's only an intel 4500MHD inside), but older ones should be playable... movies - yes ;)

i'm aware this is a better display, but i'm affraid this native resolution will be too big 4 me (the letters too small)

I would say WSXGA+ because you'd have more screen real estate to work with doing most tasks. And as for gaming, you can always lower the res, just keep the aspect ratio the same in order to minimize "bluriness".

WSXGA+ all the way, unfortunately for me i will have to go with WXGA (on dv5t) as HP doesn't do custom builts in Saudi Arabia. BUt yea WSXGA+ will be much better and will give u more room to do tasks simultaneously. WSXGA+ is worth the extra money.

oh, when i see these models here on the forum, i could cry :).... cause there are no dell studios or hp dv5ts in croatia... :(

tnx guys, i think i'll go for the wsxga+, but first i'm gonna try both screens and see what i like more

+ @harper: where do i set this aspect ratio up?
++ which model is this SE? =)

i went to the store 2day, and all i could see was a wsxga+ on hp 6710b with vista and @120DPI - i liked it - so vista won't make problems to me... the thing that concerns me is XP - 'cause, at least for some time at the beginning of my lap usage, i'd be using XP. i just can't get on vista that fast :)

    since i have a 17" desktop, and i'm still using 1024x768 :D, i think the wsxga+ resolution for a 15.4" would be a shock to me...

I just got my dv5t with WXGA and plan on returning it for the WXGA+

Coming from a T61p of 1400x1050, I felt like I was scrolling way too much

Most games have the option of keeping the aspect ration the same. IE: 16:9 vs 4:3

I'm currently running Vista X64 right now, and I couldn't be happier. Just remember to follow the vista tweaks guide right after you do a clean install, and you'll be all set. :D

And as for SE....I presume you're talking about the HP Pavilion line , which has the dv6700 and the dv6700 SE(special edition). Which is basically a white LCD cover instead of the black, and a different colored keyboard also.

@SE - no :D i'm talking about the cell phone on your avatar :)

    ...
@uncming: i'd also prefer the WXGA+ resolution, but since there's no such in croatia that comes with this model, only WXGA or WSXGA+...

i believe i'm going for WXGA, cause this WSXGA+ is too small for me, and i don't want to waste my nerves on settings with xp...i hope i'll be satisfied with 1280x800 (even that will be smthng totally new since i have a 1024x768 on 17" crt right now :D)

I would get the lower resolution. I also hate having the characters too small. As far as increasing the DPI to make things larger, this will work, but there are lots of programs out there that assume you are running the default DPI and they will look strange when run with a custom DPI setting. For example, you may see text truncated or running into other text, or running off the edge of a window. Or, you may see partial lines of text or the lines of text may look like a few pixels along the top or bottom have been trimmed off.

I have tried different DPI setting in the past and I always ended up setting it back to the default...

I think the DVD movie quality is still very good with the lower res screen, but I am also not one of those video quality freaks, you know who you are :) I've never seen a blu-ray movie on a laptop though so I can't comment there.

    i totally agree with you...
and i don't want to destroy my eyesight :)
and no, i'm not a video quality freak ;)

i will also do not so much gaming, because there's only a 4500MHD inside...

i think this WXGA resolution will meet all of my mid-user needs

tnx for all the help to everyone

I regret not going to WSXGA+, everything is so huge compared to my desktop XP. I want to return it to get a WSXGA+ instead of WXGA, but not sure about it/how. I bought it 2 weeks ago, received it last thursday. I bought it with the 400$ coupon... Sigh. Wish i had gone to the 1299$ price with the WSXGA+ screen, not the 2.53GHz T9400 Processor i got instead. Is there a way I can return it and get the a different customized one (or at least the screen) w/ the same coupon (which is expired already)? Also, is gaming resolution a big difference between the 2?

If you're running Vista get the highest resolution as possible. Vista use other fonts which scale better with the DPI setting. Better resolution makes the fonts look better and with less aliasing artifacts. Higher resultion simply gives you more options how to setup your screen that suits your needs.

i know that Vista deals better with DPI settings, but as i already said, i might be using XP, at least in the beginning...
i'm not a demanding user, and there's no dedicated graphic card inside, so i think WXGA will suit my needs...

and if i set the higher DPI (f.e. 120) on WSXGA+ i don't get much more workspace than on WXGA, don't i?

and doesn't the graphics card (it's a chip here, to be correct) do much more work dealing with the 1650x1080 than the 1280x800? does that effect the power consumption?

    tnx

It is more work for your GPU only if you are gaming or doing something graphically intensive, and even then there's no real change in power consumption.

And the SE is the k660i. :)

i play unreal at 1280x800 on my dv7t. i also have a wsxga+ screen. although the glare in the day time / under lighting conditions is excessive to me, you HAVE TO see the quality at night time.

i have pictures that seem like they're 3d on this screen / with the infinity option. i dont know what i can attribute the great graphics to, but they're stunning. pictures dont look the same anymore and playing unreal at night is gorgeous.

yes, but you also have a 17" display, and i'm buying a 15.4" lappie (therefor the WXGA+ would be perfect, but... :() - it'll be too small for me.. so i'm going after WXGA

yeah, Brightview has it's own pros and cons, just like everything else :)
it's a matter of taste and choice

    and here's the configuration i'm after :)

Using higher DPI settings doesn't necessarily give you larger workspace as there are other things that matters as well (like fixed size bitmaps, borders etc.). It's usually more efficient to reduce the DPI from a higher setting.

I don't think the power consumption is noticable between resolutions in Vista desktop mode.
