I think it is time for those of us waiting to order the Envy 17 Sandy Bridge to have our own thread. I plan on ordering mine AS SOON as the ordering page is up with the 2820QM processor.

jywang, wow, why didn't I make this thread? Thanks. :D Well... I admit....I've been tinkering with the idea of buy the M17x R3...been on the NBR Alienware threads out of curiosity of course...lol...

I'm trying to get the whole picture. So the M17x R3 has pretty much the same specs as the nonorderable yet Envy 17 3D SB edition?

The M17x R3 has a better video card and an HDMI input....?
I guess I want to see how HP deals with this and if they are going to offer us any upgrades to make it really worth for us to buy their product instead of moving to Alienware....

The real thing HP still has going is the sexyness of its design, etching, etc, simplicity...yadda yadda... and a nice warranty. Alienware gives its owners the short shaft with a pathetic 1 year warranty that will NOT cover paint and finish! Which blows my mind. After 30 days if you laptop chips paint they make you buy a special policy for more money! Argh....

Again, I do hope HP will give us more options on the Envy 17 3D to keep us here.... I want to see HDMI in if possible, with blueray writer...although I won't care that much, just nice to have...

I too will be ordering the SB Envy 17 as soon as it's available.
I check the HP site every day.

Just out of curiosity, I'm in Canada and I want to buy one of the customized HP's from the US online store, does anybody have any experience in bringing one of these across the border, how much will customs ding me?

Reason I want to get it in the US is because most Canadian laptops have these ridiculous French style layout keyboards which is frankly quite annoying when you are used to a certain keyboard layout. I've seen the HP Envy 15 at Futureshop and it has the above mentioned keyboard layout....really pathetic.

By the way guys, if anyone hears about COUPONS for the Envy 17 3D SB edition, please be kind to post them here, I will if I hear/see anything, promise! :D

P.S. Hope we don't have to wait too long...I'd like the rumor of January 24 announcement to be true.

Dell will service anything that was defective from the factory. If however you chip the paint by knocking it against a surface or whatever, then you would need to purchase the accidental damage (advanced care) to cover that. It's a pretty straightforward warranty.

I also would like to know this :)

Not only does futureshop carry the french style layout, the laptops don't even get released same time in Canada as they do in the U.s.

    Subscribed lol.

Definetely waiting for the E17 sandybridge... very, very impatiently I might add. :(

I was SO close to buying a DV7T quad configured very nicely for $950 after instant rebate and the $200 off coupon code. You can't even get prebuilts of the older DV7T for that kinda price (nor are they anywhere near as fast or well equipped)

There better be a pretty good coupon code for the envy line for us early adopters!

Whats the difference between the Radiance screen and the Full HD screen currently offered for the E17?

Cuz I saw that it was 1920 by 1080....

    Anyways I'm also subscribed....

The only resolution offered with the radiance screen is 1600x900 and only for the Envy 14 currently.

Apparently it is the best screen ever offered by laptops... It's colors simply pop and next to any other laptop it makes the other one look like junk in comparison...

Offering a radiance screen in 1920x1080 is wishful thinking at this point and I know it will never happen :(

...ehhh, that would be a tough call... 1600x900 might look a little funny on a 17" screen.

I just might though. combine that with the pretty good GPU's on the envy, and you could run most all games out right now at high settings @1600x900

1080P would be tough to run at high settings with good fps.

second thought... 1080P on a laptop screen is WAY overkill.

They say you really can't notice the difference between 720P and 1080P until the screen is roughly 40" lol

hi 5150Joker, thanks for popping in our HP thread ;) . The thing is, I called Alienware myself to ask them several quesitons on their policy. I specifically gave him the example...if after 30 days, due to NO FAULT OF MINE, then paint just happens to flake off, will I be able to get a replacement/fix...answer NO. I would need to buy the special package deal that you mentioned. That did not sound so good to me. I know its unlikely to happen, but still...after 30 days? Not even 90 days for paint? It should be covered for the 1 year at least but its not.

Either way, That won't sour me on getting a future Alienware. I'm a gamer at heart....right now I'm more focused on work, so occassional gaming on medium and watching Bluray movies, and 3D...the Envy should suffice for now. :D I just think the buyer needs to be aware before they make the purchase..and I was informed.

frankieo11, NOO!!!!! Stay away from the Dark Side (Alienware!) Hahah, j/k of course. :p

Here is my suggestion. If you are having trouble deciding, like I kinda was/maybe still am on the fence...then just wait. Yes, wait. Wait until at least HP put up the new specs for us to order the Envy 17/3D models and see what they actually offer.... I think you'll be able to make a more informed decision either way. I do hope the one you pick will give you a smile on your face, lol. :D (Geez, did I sound like Jerry Springer or sumfin? :p )

Hopefully they offer a non-3d Envy 17... I don't wan't 3d technology on a laptop whatsoever... or on my TV lol.

I figure it will considering the current E17 offered the choice.

If there isn't much of a premium, I would suggest getting the 3D version even if you aren't going to use the 3D goggles. You can always sell the goggles and benefit from the 120Hz screen.

i guess the alienware vs envy comes down to design. Envy looks like a business class laptop while alienware is sure a gaming laptop just looking at it.

Yeap, very good reason to get the 3D.... besides... believe me from one who was skeptical about 3D...in Gaming like Black Ops its to die for...once you look through the scope in 3D there is NO going back, to 2D, it won't cut it. Besides, HP has me with that silly movie 3D demo...very well done, even my parents were all giddy about it. :D

That is why I did not get the M17x R3 from Alienware wanting to hold off for the M18x hoping that not only will I get the Crossfire HD 6970s but it will have 3D and I will be in heaven.... even if no 3D, at least I'll have my 3D Envy.

One other aspect that is swaying me to HP is the fact that the Alienware uses a 240W brick vs 120W in HP. I had no problems using the 120W on a Continental flight with the ac/dc adapter that supports "no charging". I read on the forum that someone had trouble with getting their 240W brick to work on a plane.

The Envy 17 also worked with an older Dell 90W brick that I keep in my office.

But that is the issue, this model the M17x R3 is not a gaming monster, no SLI, no Crossfire, look at the NBR Alienware threads see why the fans are not happy and waiting for the M18x calling it the real R3....

I also hope that they have retail pre-configured models shortly after release... I have a newegg preferred account that I would much rather use than HP's 6 month no-no. Newegg still doesn't carry the HPDV7 sandybridge, but they did start selling the Toshiba and Lenovo SB laptops...

Did u get any discounts off ur alienware? Max they offered was 2%. Plus the Dell rep wasnt really friendly, lol. He keep trying to get me buy some nonSB system knowing that I plan to spent only 1500$ on the laptop. Not gonna pay that much where hp gives at least 10% for students.

I used the $225 off link for the nvidia bundle. Then I got a little extra off working with a dell rep on the phone because I used a dell preferred accounted. No way I'm letting them get 27% interest rate to earn back the extra discount though :)

yea hehe. I just called hp and a rep told me that a lot of ppl asked about the new envy 17 version. And he went to ask the person in charge of the new release directly and was told that they can't tell. I guess it's either something they didnt figure out about the laptop yet or they are waiting for other companies to make moves and then determine the price.

Im hoping the jan 24 rumor is true

Its now Saturday January 15, 2011 and I find myself a bit antsy. Why? Finding out tonight people get to use this AMAZING $500 coupon to order their Envy 14s with the Magical Radiance display....and here I am wanting the Envy 17 3D SB edition...and nothing yet...no announcement, no coupon, nothing...and to boot, I have a tooth that needs to come out, :( sorry not relevant...but makes it all worse, lol.

I even tried in desperation to apply the coupon code tonight to the regular Envy 17 3D and it did not work.... Question is why? Why not? Its still an Envy, it still has the older CPU, so why not try to clean their stocks of the old Envy 17 3D? Not sure...

And this rumored date of January 24 can't get here fast enough.... I've been tempted by the M17x R3, now this $500 coupon teaser on the Envy 14....

I went today to Costco just to browse... I saw the HP 15.3" screens and went, WHAAAT??? I didn't realize how small the 15 inch laps were...so How in the World would I settle for an Envy 14? To me, the Envy 14 is like having a very sexy netbook that is bigger than a netbook! LMFAO :D so the size, not having a bluray drive, and no 1080p is what is holding me back from making the purchase tonight for a very hot Envy 14....

So yeah, that is my rant for tonight. Thanks for letting me vent... :p

Your statement only holds if you are watching a movie. Computer resolution is different. while I think 1080p is overkill, I will have nothing else then 1600x900 on a 17 inch screen. The only time you cant tell a difference is if you are watching a movie.

This statement is different from person to person.

For example me, I cannot stand the 1600X900 AT ALL. I am used to high resolution displays for years now. This is the only reason I am not getting the DV7 and waiting for the Envy 17.

Second, I see every person here talking about Jan 24 release date just because a user reported a that date. I wish it was true myself as well but do not count on it. Remember It took HP almost three months to release the 3D model after they announced it. Off course now, the clock is ticking faster because users are demanding the new Intel processors but that's about it.

Hopefully they will release it soon.
