Don't bother calling or chatting. I've spent several hours on the phone and in chat with HP. I'm MAD. I submitted this letter to Mark Hurd:

Here's a snippet of the very long chat session:
It goes on like that for a while. If it weren't for the typos and grammar I might think I was chatting with a bot.

I'd like to buy a Pavillion dv4-1155se from Best Buy. It's nearly exactly what I want, just missing the LED backlight and Blu-ray options (which would raise the cost substantially so I can do without them), nice imprint too, and I could get $70 off a nice HP All-in-One printer to raise the bill to the $1K threshold necessary to abuse BB's 2 year financing, but... I don't know what to do here. All the big PC makers suck at support but HP has me fuming at the moment.

Well, I'll be ****ed. That actually worked. I got a call back from HP, they set me up with a case manager, and she gave me a clear answer. HP won't credit anyone towards a new notebook under this service enhancement plan, which isn't terribly surprising, and the delay is due solely to the Texas repair center being whacked by Hurricane Ike rather than a parts shortage as I had speculated. That center is now running 24x7, 6 days a week to clear the backlog.

I still suspect that they will run out of parts and be forced to make other arrangements, eventually, but it sure was nice to get a clear answer. I might pick up that dv4-1155se after all.

I asked about Hybrid Crossfire support on the current series HP AMD notebooks while I had the chance. Unfortunately that level of technical detail is beyond what case managers can handle. Oh well, 'twas worth a shot.

lol dude .. am sorry for all what u had to go thru .. they should take all the defective models off the market and give people either credit or an equivalent laptop !! but that would make them lose billions i guess

If you have to send it in more than 3 times they are supposed to replace it. Also in some cases if the wait is over a month or two they will replace it if you explain to them that is hurting your work they are more likely to replace it. In this case they were delayed because of a Act of God (Nature) that they definitely have no control over. The cases where it was a missing part have usually been the ones they replace.

I've had my mainboard replaced twice by HP and both times the notebook was out of warranty. I like the size and features of this model dv2120us and didn't want a replacement. HP was very prompt and efficient with their repairs each time. The first repair didn't work too well and resulted in another heat related failure. The second repair seems to be fine. I don't have the fan running all the time either. I don't think they are using the defective parts for the repair anymore, although I believe they used defective parts on the first repair. I was very happy with the way HP handled this problem which was not of their making.
