    Hello Forum,

I just purchased Hp Pavilion DV6 and it's preloaded with windows Home 7. I want to remove the pre-loaded windows home 7 and reinstall from scratch and create new partitions.

    Please guide me.

    * Should I download a fresh copy of windows home 7 from Microsoft site and will my key on the laptop will work with it.

    * What are the other necessary things that I need to do.

    Chao..

    Download ABR Beta from website
ABR (Activation Backup and Restore) | directedge.us
    and follow the guidelines.
This will save and restore the Windows 7 activation and you don't have to use the key on the laptop.
Download links for Windows 7 images are also available in NBR thread
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
I would wait until an image with integrated SP1 is available.
Download all necessary drivers for your laptop, chipset, graphics, audio, AHCI, touchpad etc.
If you do a clean install, than the recovery partition is superfluous, also think about a partition "HP_TOOLS" if it exists.

Isn't the thread showing illegal material or abusing microsoft windows os :)..

If I have a key on my laptop then I guess I have the right to go to microsoft site and download windows 7 and use the key.

Can some one please correct me or this is not possible..

You can use the key on Microsoft stick, and it will probably require phone activation.

It's perfectly legal. There's no abuse. As far as ABR is concerned, you're just extracting the unique pre-activated key you paid for when you bought your notebook.

You can of course use the key on the bottom or in the battery bay - whichever location it is in. Since that one is not pre-activated, you will have to activate it. Sometimes when you as that key, as yejun stated, you may have to call Microsoft to activate it.

Both keys will only allow you to install the version of Windows you paid for. So if you paid for Home premium, they will only work for Home premium 32 or 64 bit.

Wrong. It's nothing but unique, it is same in all HP computers using same version of Windows.

The sticker-key is the unique, computer owner's actual license.

As already stated, that is fine. Though, you may have to call Microsoft to get it activated.

Why? Because Microsoft disables online activation for COA Keys that are attached to PCs that have been pre-activated by OEMs(HP). But sometimes they pass online activation.

But if you use ABR to extract the pre-activated key, then reinsert it when done installing a clean Win7 install you won't encounter this potential issue.

My laptop has some kool softwares already pre-loaded like Cyberlink DVD and Cyberlink Power Director..
How can I ensure when I do a clean installation, I get them back as well..

C:\SWSETUP -folder in your computer should contain install files for those additional softwares and you can install them one by one. Good idea is to store that separately on usb drive or burn it on dvd.

First online activation is disabled, reinstalls should work online. Reason is simple piracy prevention: some dealers took stickers from computers and put them on white-box computers.

One of those moments I just couldn't resist myself :D
