So I havent bought myself any geek toys lately, and since my laptop is running so well, I havent felt the need to replace it yet.

So in answer to my quandary, Im considering getting a large LCD monitor for my laptop.

    Something like this:

    http://www.play.com/Product.aspx?pa...Widescreen+LCD+Monitor+With+TV+Tuner+And+HDMI

Question is, I dont know what cable will need to connect to my nc8430, or even if my laptop will support an external monitor, or anything like that.

I know night_2004 has one (I read your sig if you are reading this post), so perhaps I could get some tips on what monitors/features to get and what to avoid?

    Any advice appreciated.

Well from what I read on HP.com has a "1 external VGA monitor" so it should work fine with a standard external vga lcd.

Dunno about DVI, but I'm sitting next to my friend who has that laptop and he's running on a VGA Samsung External No Problem.

Thanks for the reply Vaath =)

Unfortunately Im a bit of a newbie to all this so I have some more questions!

Is there any visual quality difference between external VGA connection and a DVI or HDMI connection? Does my laptop even support that kind of connection?

Also, this might seem a stupid question...but when you plug an external monitor into your laptop, what do you do with the laptop screen if you are trying to use the keyboard in conjunction with the external monitor?

Again, thanks in advance for any replies =)

That notebook doesn't have an hdmi or dvi out, and when you connect an external monitor you can use both screens to work on.

There is a slight difference in quality between the VGA and DVI connection on mine. I get DVI connection by using the basic docking station.
When you plug an external monitor in, you have the option of:
    1) Using only the either monitors and turning the other off
    2) Setting up an extended desktop that stretches across both monitors. This allows you to drag windows from one monitor onto another, etc.
    3) Cloning the desktops.

A good external monitor is Dell's or Samsung's widescreen range. I'm personally using a 2007WFP, which has the same resolution as the nc8430, thus allowing me to set up a perfect extended desktop (except the vibrant colours of the Dell has made my laptop's LCD look really bad).
