I bought a zv6000 on Sep 3, 2005 at Office Depot and had to get warranty work due to a bad video output port. I called on Sep 2, 2006 since I waited until the last minute and was afraid the warranty would expire. It turns out I had maybe a few more weeks per the technician from India. That made me think that maybe the warranty starts when they ship the unit after it's Built to Order rather than the receipt date when the order was originally requested. Makes sense.

I know you have to call in or fill the form out online to activate your warranty if you buy it directly from HP.

Yeah, it looks like registering for the warranty is a good idea since they reall cannot claim that the warranty is void. If you had'nt registered then probably they will take it from the day it was shipped unless you can provide proof of purchase with the date on it.

Compaq uses the date that they ship the computer out of THEIR warehouse as the default warranty date. I recently had to provide proof of purchase so that my lemon Presario V4125CL would be considered still under warranty!
