    Hey guys,

I was just wondering, since I live in Canada and all and we only have the crap 1st Generation HP Envy 15's... if I were to buy a 2nd Generation one through Ebay.CA (The canadian site, yes they have them on there)....

Would the warranty or any tech support be void because I did not buy it through a valid seller? Or does the tech support just go by the Serial # on the bottom of the laptop?

Only reason I ask is because the last thing I want to do is buy a $2000 machine, in a country that doesn't have them yet, and find myself having problems 2 months in and not be able to do anything about it.

    Anyone know?
Or if there is another way I can get a 2nd Gen HP Envy 15 to myself in Canada, without having to go to the border and all that junk, incase I do have problems and need to send it back ever?

    Thanks

I got my Envy 15 via EBay new and sealed in box and my warranty was honored and transferred into my name from the CSR who handled my case. However, since I don't have the original Order # for my Envy 15 from the seller, I am only allowed to have the warranty started from my BIOS-set Warranty Start Date. However, I am in the United States and my Envy was from an US seller, so I don't know how HP will handle with Canadian ownership of a US Generation 2. I do know that the warranties from an US Generation 2 covers North America, so your warranty might be honored by HP and there are many excuses you can make on how you acquired such a system.

How did you get through to a CSR that actually listens? Going from what people are saying on the forums it seems that most people get Indian CSRs that don't have any authority and don't seem to speak English very well. I just bought my Envy from eBay and would hate to have to go through such trouble should a problem occur.

Edit: Could you also PM me the service number/reference number so I can refer to your case should HP deny to transfer ownership or anything?

You say that you can only have a BIOS-set warranty start date. What does that mean?! Sorry I'm not that good with this BIOS stuff

The secret is NOT to call HP's Sales Support line. They are often located in India and will give you BAD service. Instead, you must contact the CSR's on the Envy Tech Support line that was written on a card that came with your Envy. These CSR's are all from North America and they accommodate all North American HDX and Envy customers.

Every new Envy made comes with a pre-determined factory warranty start date. This date might not always be accurate to the date you ordered your Envy and will not be honored as the start date of your warranty on your Envy (instead it starts on the day your Envy was received from shipping or the day you brought your Envy from a brick-and-mortar store). However in circumstances of transferring your standard warranty to another owner within the first year of purchase or other warranty date conflicts, you can use the BIOS-Set Warranty Date that was hard recorded in the factory that is tied to the BIOS, Product and Serial Numbers of your particular Envy. This date usually is listed as the date that your particular Envy was finished assembly in the factory, prior to shipping.

In the case (for me at least), the HP CSR I talked to was able to transfer the warranty of my EBay-brought Envy (had to be new and sealed as I gave proof of the auction and such to the CSR), but since auction sales are often considered resell, I had the warranty start on the BIOS date. In most cases, an EBay-brought Envy will have its warranty start under your name under the BIOS-Set Date.

You can check this date by pressing Esc during boot up and select F1 in the menu. The date will be listed there.

Anyone in the states want to give me a list of stores that would order in a custom built 15 Envy? Or do the American stores have the 2nd Generation one on the shelves as well?

Bestbuy/places like that only seem to have the 1st Gen on their site as far as I can tell.

As far as I can tell, no US Brick-and-Mortar Store sells a Gen 2 Envy pre-built or custom. HOWEVER, you can get a pre-built Gen 2 Envy off of a online US seller.

Get someone you know in the states to re-ship it to Canada.

I'm going to call HP today and see if my warranty will still be applicable if I am living in Canada with the notebook.

I'll come up with some BS like I am moving to Canada for school or something and will be there for several years, but want my warranty to be valid and to be able to ship from my address in Canada.

Then I can just order my customized one off hp.com, ship it to a package holding place (do they need to sign or anything?) on the border and drive down and get it.

    /excited.

First of all, don't come up with some BS story. Tell them the truth. "I'd like to purchase the updated Envy 15 that is available in the US. But I live in Canada. How can we work together to make this happen?". I hear people BS some company to try to "get what they want" then turn around and complain when companies turn around and BS customers. It will also alleviate any sticky situations down the road if you have to call a CSR without having to remember whatever story you spun to them before hand. Besides, I expect more out of our Northern Neighbors :)

Business ethics relies on a sense of trust between the two parties involved. If they can't trust you, there's no way that they're going to do anything to help you out. Similarly, if you don't trust them, there's no reason why you should consider doing business with them.

That having been said, they wouldn't deliver my Envy 15 to me (i5 520m based) without a signature. I'm not sure if that was a FedEx issue, or whether HP required a signature on the package. The note did come along with a "special exception signature required" or something like that.

I did notice that all of the CSR people I've called (one minor issue, but with a followup call) has been from Canada (they said "abooot" more than once), even though I called at odd hours (2:00 AM EST, same time zone as them). I used the direct Envy line that comes out of the box.

Haha that is a very good point erple. I'm going to give the customer support line a call today and see what they tell me.

Why did you require a signature when you ordered... do you live in Canada? Or did you just customize one off of the hp.com website and they made you sign for some reason?

I'll let you know my findings after I talk to a CSR.

Chatted with some HP Sales support today... and alas while it is not possible for me to order an HP Envy 15 2nd Gen through the website, as I would need a US Credit Card, the warranty does however transfer to whichever country I live in.

So in theory, if I can receive the laptop somehow, then they will still honor a warranty.

    Ebay anyone?.... /browses

*EDIT: /wonders the legitimacy of these sales...

I think that EBay Seller is a NBR Forum member. I have seen him many times in the HP Envy 15 Owner's Lounge. If I was you, I will take his sale.

I think if you buy a sealed unopened unregistered the laptop from ebay, you could get the warranty by register it on HP website. However the warranty might be started from the BIOS date, not your purchase date.
I'm not sure if you could get a warranty transfer from another owner who had already registered it before. Dell does have a transfer page ,but I can't find related page on HP website. anyone know that?
