Most of the time I use my Envy 15 on my desk and hooked up to an external monitor. In this mode I do not use the laptop screen, so have it set to just display on the external. However, to turn on the laptop obviously I have to open it up and press the power switch.

What I want to do, is turn it on whilst keeping it closed. I used to be able to do this with my Dell Latitude E6400, as it has an option in the BIOS to turn on automatically when AC is connected. Thus, when I turned it off I would simply unplug power, then to turn it on again would just plug the power back in without having to open lid.

I have looked, and the Envy 15 BIOS is very limited and I don't see a similar option. Is there possibly another solution to get it to turn on when closed?

    Thanks :)

I don't know anything about the Envy but did it come with a remote? On my DV5 I can just turn it on using the remote power button.

Unfortunately does not come with a remote.....

That is a good idea though, thanks! Anyone know if it is possible to get one that may work with the Envy?

Haven't had a look at the Envy bios options but you may be able to set a keyboard button to act as a power button. This assumes the bios has the option and you are using a wired USB keyboard.

I've never seen a laptop able to be turned on with the lid closed, but you can hook it up to your monitor while turned on and close the lid without affecting its power status.

The setting is in the Power Options control panel. Image below.

I know some Sony notebooks turn on without opening the lid. Very cool feature, but I don't think the Envy can. I'd look into the remote option.

Yeah, I already have it set up so I can close the lid after turning it on... but I'm still looking for a solution so I can leave it closed all the time when using it at a desk including switching it on!

Love the Envy so far, but this is one feature I miss from my old Dell....

The HP business laptops do this when you have the docking station(my 8510w for example) I dont believe that the envy has a docking station port, but maybe there is a USB one from HP that will provide that capability.

I have order HP 15 and gonna use a external monitor aswell - but i am a little worried the laptop screen is gonna get damaged from the heat when closed.

But since you use that setup - i hope you can fill in some details on how the heat affect the laptop screen when closed and while gaming.

It will not effect screen; the palm rest does not give so much heat to hurt lcd and even when closed LCD stay at good length distance from body so don't worry on that ground.

The Envy will turn on fine without opening it.

First, you need to be using Standby rather then turning it off. Standby literally uses about 0.1 W and the battery will last weeks that way. Windows 7 is also design so that you are not supposed to be shutting it down; using standby is "greener," more user friendly and better for productivity and usefulness.

When the system is in standby, the external keyboard will easily and quickly wake the laptop. All I have to do is move the mouse and ready to go in about 1500 milliseconds.

Is there any proof in statistics that Stand-By is better than total Shutdown?

Just put the computer to sleep when you're not using it.

I've done that to my old M17xr1 for about a year and never had any problems.

You don't really ever have to shut down modern computers these days.
