I was thinking maybe other people with the new hp's had the same problem with getting their webcam to turn on during video sessions, hopefully someone knows what the deal is.

HP's cameras are known to work with Skype, msn, etc. Do you use your HP cam or an external one. Can you see the camera working in My Computer (it should appear there as a device under your CD/DVD drive)?

Yes I use the HP cam, and yes it works fine when I turn it on through My Computer, it does appear there. The problem is that it does not turn on when a video session is started through AIM. I also tried turning it on through My Computer and seeing if AIM would recognize its on and then use it in the video session, but no luck. The camera works fine, its just how do I get AIM to use the camera, its like it doesn't know the computer has one....?

The camera can be used by only one device at a time. So if you have My Computer in camera mode, nothing else will detect it.
Does AIM have an option for camera selection/calibration? Skype, for example, has such an option and allows you to choose between devices.

    Have you seen this?

Yeah I tried not having it on and it didn't work that way either. It doesn't turn on like my parents does when the video session is initiated. There is a spot where you select the device to use and I selected the HP webcam, but it still does not turn it on when its supposed to....

And I have also read that AIM pg about what you need, I have the newest version and am using XP

I recently bought a HP dv2035, a notebook that comes with a built in webcam and mic. I have the exact same problem as you. I want to use my AIM but the webcam wont work with it. When i open it through MY COMPUTER...it works great, and all the settings on AIM are right. It jus wont open up. If you find a solution to this problem let me know... Thanx

Im sorry I don't have an answer to your problem, but i've had some experience w/ HP (just got it a week ago) and the video cam along with aim/skype for those who are interested.

    1. I downloaded skype and it worked fine with my camera right away, but once i downloaded skype i could no longer use the video chat w/ aim. skype is a pretty cool program but from my understanding a lot of people have had problems w/ their HP and skype with crashing and freezing (their computers not just the program)

with this i deleted skype and was able to get aim to work again, but not without a little finagling.

    2. try google-ing "how to enable web chat on aim" or "how to enable webcam" for some ways to force your web cam to start for aim.

some little facts that i saw myself (just in case anyone didn't see this yet) the webcam will tend to not open if you are set as away or the big one INVISIBLE.. anytime i was set as invisible there would be no feed at all,

im sorry if this isnt the answer you were looking for but it just a few tips.

I have the exact same problem as well. AIM just doesn't like the HP built in webcam. I've just switched over to MSN when I use webcam. Works perfectly.
