So i've had my dv9000 for about 3 or 4 months now and I haven't ever bothered to try and use the webcam until tonight. I can't seem to get it to work though. Doesn't work in quickplay (the screen is just black) and trillian says it couldn't locate my hp pavillion cam and to make sure it's setup right.

I'm at a loss and there's tons of threads on webcams out there that I don't even know where to start. Any pointers?

The problem is caused by Windows messenger. That program causes all other webcam programs to malfunction saying the webcam isn't connected until the computer is rebooted. The problem doesn't alway occur when using windows messenger. If you disable windows messenger from starting up with Vista and use a different program such as Yahoo messenger, then your webcam will always function. as long as windows messenger isn't running or has run since you booted up your computer.

I can't believe HP hasn't notified Microsoft about this problem and fixed this problem yet. Windows Live Messenger has better video than Yahoo messenger.

As someone who is thinking of getting a dv2500, does everyone have issues? Is it possible just to use the webcam with WLM with no problems?

Obviously it's not related to Windows Messenger because I don't have it installed, yet I have the same issue with my webcam not working properly in Vista.

It sort of works in the original install of Vista and Quickplay, but the video plays back at about 2x speed, which is ridiculous. Since then I've done a clean install of Vista to get rid of the bloatware, and my webcam still doesn't work. Vista detects it, but it doesn't work properly since it won't turn "on".

I've done the firmware ugprade along with the latest driver, and it still doesn't work as of this date.

Unfortunately it's not an issue with Microsoft, it's a driver issue with the manufacturer of the webcam (Ricoh I believe). However I agree HP should be pushing the manufacturer to make a working driver available.

I've complained to HP about it...if you're having issues, make sure you tell HP you're not happy that your webcam isn't working properly. The more people complain, the faster they will do something about it. If you don't voice your concerns, HP won't bother with it - make yourself heard.

This is in windows vista. I will check to see if windows messenger is running, but last I checked it wasn't (or if it is, it's not showing an icon in the bottom right tray). I use trillian instead.

This thing hasn't worked since the day I got the laptop. Damn shame.
