Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 (64-Bit) (problem is also there with Windows 7)

    Problem:

I sometimes try to connect to a network, then the wireless led suddenly orange although Wireless is Enabled. My friend who has an XP system can connect to that network in the cafe just fine so does everybody else, but on my system, it says connecting, then the icon turns orange as if there was no wirelesss card installed.

I am using the Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN v12.2.0.11 Driver which was installed through Windows Update along with HP Wireless Assistant v3.50.2.1

    Any help?

    this is really frustrating!

Now I have an orange icon for wireless, although wireless is enabled in both device manager and through the touch key.

the icon will turn blue if I restart and wireless access will be restored, but I will lose it again if I try to connect to a wireless network.

    This problem happens randomly :(

There you have your problem. NEVER LET WINDOWS UPDATE MESS WITH DRIVERS. Jeez, this should be stickied. Uninstall that, grab your drivers from the HP site and leave them alone. You can uninstall the Wireless Assistant if you don't like it, it's nothing but an annoyance anyway. But never ever let Windows Update change drivers again. At least not for OEM (brand name) machines. It usually works on custom-built computers.

Agree with the driver suggestion. You can check the HP site or also the members DV5t driver page located here at NBR but…. please read the preface. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=338874

I'm currently running the Wifi 5100 on a DV4t with driver v.12.4.0.21 and it works perfectly. You can also enter the advanced driver settings tab through device manager and turn up the “Roaming Agressiveness” and/or the “Transmit Power” to medium-high or high. I think the defaults are “medium”. Last…. some users have also reported connection problems with their 5100 AGN and have resolved the problem by turning off the “802.11N Mode” via the same advanced tab.
