Well documented DVD drive issue upon clean Windows installation

    HP Envy 3D 17" 1110TX

HDD failed so I did a clean install of Win7 and everything works fine except the DVD drive. It won't read anything. Inserting a DVD leaves the drive showing blank in Explorer. Double clicking it results in an "insert disk" pop up and ejects the DVD.

Windows seems to find and install drivers for the drive automatically (it reports fine in Device Manager) but flat out doesn't work.

Seems this is a common issue - I've been searching the internet for hours looking for a fix and I have come up with a lot of people asking for help and no solutions. Commonly happens when a reinstal is done, even happens to people who report using the HP recovery discs. Hoping someone here has some ideas.

    Thanks
    Sam

Little bit more info from the owner today - the DVD drive actually did work initially but stopped mid-way through installing a game and hasn't worked since. Is this 100% going to be a hardware issue or is there still a possibility it's driver related? I really don't want to buy a replacement drive and have the issue persist.
