probably just the hard drive looking for data. Like every hard drive makes that sound. Though i only hear mine if I hold my ear next to the hdd.

    hmm...nowhere near the same specs.

on both of my hard drives i get the click noise. when it occurs on my primary drive, randomly mind you, my HD activity light goes solid for a second or so, and windows will stall what it is doing, though the mouse does not stall.

I think I have the same noise when the computer is idle, as mentioned in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=203820&page=2

I have bought an external USB hard drive that is the same Seagate model as the one came with the notebook, and it make the same sound when externally plugged to the laptop:
"ding" *1 sec* "chit" *several secs* "ding" *1 sec" "chit".....

    Maybe it's Seagate quality... *shrug*

As said in the other thread, running "MobileMeter" in the background eliminated the dings and the stalls (for the internal hard drive only). Though the program repeatedly access the hard drive, it might be better than having the internal mechanical parts banging into one another hard enough to make noise (not to mention the stalls).

I have a Dell Laptop for work with a Seagate HDD and it also makes the clicking noise. I wouldn't worry about it, I've been using this laptop for over a half a year and its been doing it since day 1 and has given me any problems. If you hear a constant clicking that is repetitive then you have something to worry about.

My Hitachi 250 GB HD made this weird noise that sounded like a marble being dropped on a metal plate. It would start about 5 min after boot-up, when grinding stops, and at least once per min when HD was idling. I'd rather have constant grinding sound than this loud noise.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ndows-explorer-click-sounds-in-windows-vista/

The sound you are hearing is called.
"Windows Navigation Start.wav" It sounds just like the old HD brush heads going to their park locations.

    To hear this sound:

1 - Right mouse click on desktop
    2 - Select personlize
    3 - Then select sounds
4 - You should see the Windows default Sound List
5 - Move down the list until you see the start Navigation sound.
    6 - Select Sart Navigation
7 - Select and Click on Test.
9 - Is this the sound you are hearing?
10 - If you wish to turn this off select none for this sound under the sounds tab.

It is the HD but you need to be careful with this because your hard drive could be dying
